James, you can't get onto any sandbelt course on a Saturday except as a member/reciprocal member.

Chris

I was trying to outline the possibilty.

I agree with you about the reality on the well-patronised city courses of Saturday play.  In retrospect, I have found it difficult (impossible?) to get a Saturday game on a Melbourne sand-belt club that my Club is fortunate enough to have reciprocity with.  Saturdays are full!

Even full reciprocal rights do not provide access for a Saturday game at peak time  - you are 100% right.

If you are away from the cities/sandbelt, you have a better  chance of a weekend game.

Ed:  I would not recommend exactly the same courses which Ben did, but I would be pretty much on the same plan.

Save New Zealand for its own trip someday, stopping en route is very time consuming.

Concentrate on Melbourne, make sure to include Barnbougle and New South Wales which is an easy one-day stopover in Sydney.  Royal Adelaide IS a great course, but unless you are notching top 100 courses on your belt, you'd have just as much fun seeing another Melbourne course (Woodlands or Commonwealth or Portsea or St. Andrews Beach).

Barnbougle is public so weekend play is not a problem, just book it in advance.

What is the opinion of Metropolitan? I have been told by a fellow GCA'er that they have some great green complexes there.
What time of year is best for weather and course conditions? As of now I have April in mind, but its not set in stone.
Thanks everyone for all the input.

Ed, Metropolitan is the most overrated golf course in Australia.  There are at least half a dozen sandbelt courses worth seeing before it, and thats being generous.

There is one great green complex there (the 9th, which would be a great hole if the tee was 50m to the left), but apart from that they're nothing special.

James and Chris -

Thanks to both of you for the comprehensive overview.  Sounds as if Saturday is indeed a day for cricket.

Ed,
Re your timing, most of the greens maintenance occurs in Feb/March, so you should be OK in April.  Personally, my all time favourite time of year to play golf in Melbourne is May.  The greens are at their best, the weather is still fairly warm, and the wind is generally lighter.  (It can still blow 40mph any day of the year though!)
I can't add much more to the advice above, except to say that I would send the letters to the clubs as early as possible and base your itinerary on the responses.  I agree with all who said it will be impossible to play a private course on a Saturday, and Sunday will be tight as well - so play Barnbougle all weekend, there are worse fates in life!
Regards,
George

I thinnk March is the best month of the year for most things in Melbourne. April is generally pretty good weatherwise in Melbourne (but daylight saving is over by then). May can be a bit hit and miss. Usually sometime in May someone flicks a switch and the winter weather rolls in. Condition wise all the sandbelt courses will be excellent.
