Rank the Majors
« on: February 02, 2006, 12:01:47 PM »
I'm sure this has been done before but I'd be very interested to see how everyone ranks the majors and how different this is depending where you're from. I am from England and, unsurprisingly, I would rank them as follows:

1. The Open
2. US Open
3. Masters
4. US PGA

I think most people in the UK would rank the Masters ahead of the US Open but I can't rank an invitational tournament ahead of that country's national open.

For me, this years's US Women's Open at Newport CC may be the most interesting with Annika taking on the young girls on a classic seaside venue.

I really do wish that Michelle Wie would focus on Annika now, and the boys later.

thanks for the timely thread, Ed, as I raised the issue in the "greatest shot" thread

if I was capable of winning majors ;D ;D ;D, in order of preference I would like to win:

US Open
The Open..which seems like the world championship of golf to me
The Masters
PGA  (poor, poor PGA....will anyone NOT have it last?  they should change it back to match-play!)
199 played, only Augusta National left to play!

Paul,

I would have more interest in it, but the last I checked, money does talk.

I do think the PGA is better served by venues such as Kiawah and Whistling Straits. Perhaps they should strive for more of these modern courses as a way of differentiating.

Southern Hills in 08 will be fun to watch though

Bill,

This might be changing the topic slightly, but I was very interested by your assertion that the US Open identifies the best golfer. It seems to me that the US Open identifies the straightest hitter and doesn't allow creativity to flourish. Miss the green, get out your loftiest wedge and hack it out - no options. My impression has always been that the Open and the Masters identify the best golfer.

Being a sad statto, I got a list of all time major winners. I wanted to see how many of each respective major the top players had won. Of the 13 players who have won 6 majors, the wins are broken down as follows:

Open - 35 wins
Masters - 27 wins
US Open, US PGA - 24 wins

It's a slightly false figure as Bobby Jones never played the PGA or the Masters, Harry Vardon is included with his 6 Opens from a bygone age. However, how many times did Hogan, Snead, Sarazen come over and play the Open in their prime. Interestingly, every one of these 13 golfers won the Open. Excluding old timers, only Lee Trevino didn't win the Masters. Faldo and Snead didn't win the US Open. Several didn't win the PGA (5 players).

2.  Masters
3.  Open Championship
4.  US Amateur Championship  (very few chances to get this one, and often the most cherished by those who have it and professional majors)
5.  PGA Championship

In Australia, my feeling is that its the Masters and Open tied for #1, daylight, then the US Open, daylight, then the PGA.

Masters-> Tradition, Excitement, Anticipation
US Open-> Classic Courses, Toughest Test of Golf
Open Championship-> History, Courses, Difference between the golf I play daily vs what they play over there

PGA-> At times the courses are nice, Had a history of being easier than the previous 3, sense an absence of tradition in this tournament.

Masters is always the best...always is the most intense with the best players and the best course of any major, unless they were to have a major at CPC ;)

Garland-

Why TPC over the Masters?

Evan,

I wholeheartedly agree that the Masters is a fabulous spectator event. However, I think many people confuse spectating with major. I equate major with qualifying the designation of great golfer.

A link to some of my opinion on this matter.

http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forums2/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=20719

Another post of mine on the matter.

I agree with Jim that the amateurs are irrelevant when it comes to inclusion as a grand slam event. NO AMATEUR WILL EVER WIN A GRAND SLAM (lifetime or single year) EVER AGAIN, EVEN IF EACH MAJOR ALLOW HALF OF THE FIELD TO BE AMATEURS.

As my earlier thread discussed, I believe the Masters does not belong in the grand slam, because there was no analogous event in the original grand slam. I am becoming more enamored with a worldwide event sponsored by the professional tours. Year one, hosted by European Tour, year two hosted by Asian Tour, year three hosted by US Tour, year four hosted by alternately South African Tour and Japan Tour. Then repeat. No amateurs need apply.

Open-History,tradition and it is in effect a world open.
U.S. Open-National championship

Masters-Same course but it is an invitational.

U.S.P.G.A.-Suffers from venues and the fact that is the last
               of the four.
