Why are tees flat?
« on: January 22, 2006, 10:35:54 AM »
Is it to give the golfer the most 'fair' start to the hole?
Because it would be too tough if things were uneven?
Because with some undulation, a good player would tee off with the ball slightly below his feet if the hole called for a fade, taking some skill away from the requirement?

I think tees are "flat" because that does not discriminate against any segment of players. Everybody starts from the same point, with a level stance which does not favour any players. If tees were canted markedly to either direction, the slope would dictate play more than is desireable. It is better to let the ground contours of the fairway or hazards ask players to work the ball a certain direction.

Tees are not perfectly flat, a slope of approximately 1% should be incorporated to facilitate surface drainage.

Andy,
It's most likely a carryover from the earliest rules of golf when the next 'tee' was within a club's length of the hole(cup) just played.

And because most golfers would think it unacceptable to play a hole that did not have a flat tee. Most people already complain if they have a small portion of the tee that's not completely flat. Golf is hard enough for most people without adding extra challenge from the start of the hole.

OK, how about if instead of just tilted, the tee had some roll to it so you could find whatever kind of little slope you wanted?
I guess I wonder if it would add some fun, and/or if it would make things tougher or easier.

One GREAT reason to have flat tees is so that players don't all try to hit from the exact same spots and wear that spot(s) completely out.

Hi guys

Tony (my father) wrote an article on this topic a little while ago.  I thought I'd post the link for you to have a look at it.
