Diverse pars but a superior stretch.
« on: January 18, 2006, 09:57:11 PM »
Tom Doak's comments about great holes got me thinking about great three hole stretches where par is different on each of the holes.

And, where each of the holes, individually, were good to exceptional.

Stretches like:

# 11, 12 and 13 at Pacific Dunes

# 3, 4, 5:
# 12, 13, 14
# 7, 8, 9
# 15, 16, 17 all at Seminole

# 13, 14, 15
# 5, 6, 7      all at Pine Valley

# 6, 7, 8      at NGLA

# 9, 10, 11 at Friar's Head

# 9, 10, 11
# 2, 3, 4     at Hidden Creek

# 6, 7, 8
# 16, 17, 18  at Pebble Beach

# 5, 6, 7
# 10, 11, 12 at Pine Tree

# 1, 2, 3
# 16, 17, 18 at Boca Rio

# 3, 4, 5 at Merion

What other courses provide good three hole stretches composed of a par 3, par 4 and a par 5 ?

And, are courses with an abundance of these stretches fun to play ?

There should be a few more entries from Pete Dye and his patented 5-3-4 finish that he utilized on more than a few of his courses :)

Royal Melbourne West 4,5,6.  3 of the best 5 holes on a Top 10 course.

Patrick - I am surprised you ommitted these:

13-14-15 at Sand Hills
16-17-18 at Sand Hills
1-2-3 at Sand Hills

Any of those are fine contenders.

7-8-9 at Crystal Downs on the way back to the clubhouse - each one individually qualifies as an all-time favorite of mine, and together they can be merciless.  After the short and devious 7th it's back uphill with two back-breakers.

Holes 13-14-15 at Greywalls are part of the toughest stretch of the golf course (which really begins at 12).  Hole 13 is a perfect medium length par five with an incredibly contoured green, #14 is bunkerless but features perhaps the toughest green to hit on the course (maybe even tougher than #1), and #15 is a long, slightly downhill par three over a rocky streambed to a wild, three-tiered green.  Holes 1 through 3 at Greywalls are another nice trio.  Hole 3 is a tad benign considering the first two, both of which are whoppers.

Some other favorites:

4-5-6
12-13-14 all at Tobacco Road

7-8-9 (5-6-7 ain't bad either)
15-16-17 all at Kingsley Club

Patrick:

Interesting excercise! But just another example of how you have a mind-bendlingly formulaic "golf" mind. Let it go, Pal. Let the concentration about such things as "par" go and even you maybe be FREE AT LAST!

Patrick,

Stanford's 16-17-18 are a nice stretch, more beautiful than strategically superior.

Plainfield's 10-11-12 are terrific.

Got a taste of these today...........in a cold south wind and nasty spits of rain:

Pacific Dunes 3, 4, 5
Pacific Dunes 16, 17, 18.
(already mentioned by Mr. Mucci...PD 11, 12, 13.)

The ingenious routing that these groups are part of is, IMO,  another reason why the PD FUN FACTOR is way up there!

Bandon Trails 3, 4, 5....my favorite three hole stretch at the Trails.
Bandon Trails 16, 17, 18.....a tough way to get in when the wind howls out of the north.

Bandon Dunes 1,2,3......I have always liked this start, as these holes get you up where you can overlook the entire property, get you down towards the ocean and meat of the course, and get you warmed up to walk and play.

Michael, right now, as our guest, you have the honor on the first tee.

After that, who knows who'll play first!

The best two diverse stretches I can think of are

15, 16 & 17 at Enniscrone
16, 17 & 18 at St. Enodoc-what a great finish!

Though I am very partial toward 9, 10 & 11 at Pennard.

Ciao

At Deal, 2-3-4 is a blast to play. You can score well on those holes, but there's pressure to get off to a good start, because you know you're probably not going to score well on the back.

Speaking of the demanding back, it includes the wonderful 14-15-16 stretch.

Ballyneal has an inspiring three in 15 (par 3), 16 (par 5), 17 (par 4).

How about where the course begins (1, 2, 3) with stretch of strong holes of differing pars:

Pine Needles
Olympic (Lake)
Spyglass
Cuscowilla
Kingsbarns
Royal Portrush (Dunluce)

Cruden Bay #4 (par 3), #5 (par 4) and #6 (par 5). I think this was the best 3 hole stretch of any kind we played in Scotland last October, let alone a 3 hole stretch with different pars.

Royal Dornoch #9 (par 5), #10 (par 3) and #11 (par 4) isn't bad either, but Royal Dornoch #12 (par 5), #13 (par 3) and #14 (par 4--Foxy) may be better...

Doug

I originally listed several other three hole combinations including yours at Dornoch and both stretches at Deal.  I didn't list the CB series because of the 5th.  Is this really a great hole or is it sandwiched in a great run of two on one side and two on the other?

Many courses have trios like this.  Just among the clubs I've been a member of, I can think of dozens.

Pumpkin Ridge's Witch Hollow course has bunches of groups of 3/4/5 trios.

2-3-4, 3-4-5, 4-5-6, 5-6-7, 9-10-11,11-12-13, 12-13-14, 13-14-15, 14-15-16.

My favorite is probably 12-13-14.

Ghost Creek as 2-3-4, 4-5-6, 10-11-12, 15-16-17.

2-3-4 is probably my favorite there, although I like 15-16-17.

Hannastown has 6-7-8, 7-8-9, 10-11-12, 14-15-16.  10-11-12 is my favorite of those.

I also was a member at a course called Rock Creek in Portland.  The par starting at #2 went 4-3-4-5 for the next 16 holes and then ended with a 4.  This meant that for every par 3 or par 5, you had a trio that started there.

Beyond my clubs (new and old)  Bandon Dunes has a starting trio along with 4 others.  1-2-3, 2-3-4, 11-12-13, 12-13-14 and 13-14-15.  I'd take 12-13-14 as my favorite there.

Pacific also has 12-13-14, 13-14-15, 14-15-16, 15-16-17.  Of the ones mentioned before and these, my favorite would probably be 3-4-5.
