What Would Make GCA.com Better?
« on: October 18, 2005, 02:02:58 PM »
I think it would be nice to break the forum into categories (not many) but just to slow down the 'page drift' a bit.

Maybe the site's just perfect as it is...

What do you think?

Jack's right.

It would be nice if Ran provided a nice Irish and Scottish Single Malt selection on the left side of the page, one where you have a device that plugs into the USB port with a spigget just off the left side of your computer that kept the glass always full.

I wish the search engine were more effective (either that, or I wish I could figure out how to use it better.) I'd like to look up discussions of specific courses, both for informational purposes and to know what's already been posted so I don't repeat something.

It might be usefull if there were a standing list of courses that have been discussed here, with a link to those discussions.

Tommy - a firewire would be faster.

This would be true......

We also better have a heavier gauge wire for it because the consumption rate would be astounding.

One could call this the ultimate output device. ;)

1. patience......with each other

2. a slower attention span, topics come and go too fast to be fully developed and discussed (the MTV effect).

3. a little more research may lead to some more enjoyable discussion.

4. a little more follow through from some us when we say we are going to post or comment and don't. (Sorry JNC I will post the St. George's photos).

I know there have been threads discussing it but I would really like to see a section telling us how to post photo's 'coz one of these days I will get round to it and a little help might encorage those of us who havn't done it yet.

As usual I should have been clearer.  I think this info should be up there permanently to make it as easy as possible and to encorage more people to try it.

thanks Mike and alos Keith Durrant who suggested to me to try photobucket.com as a free host for my photos.

I will try and make the time to have a go this weekend.

Two other things I'd like to see.  I am sure there is a lot of good informatioin on old posts that is never looked at again, some tweaking of how we access that might be in order

How can you check out what was happening e.g. around page 220?  Last christmas I had some spare time and scrolled through the frirst 50 pages but it would be fun to be able to drift back and see more of what has been posted.  At the moment I can only figure out how to do it sequentially and that means once you end a seession you have to start scrolling back from either the very first or latest page.

How about a hall of fame? If a topic recieved 10 reccomendations it could be filed in a way that made it easy to acccess.

Tony,

The reason that the web site doesn't officially encourage or sanction the posting of photos is a matter of copy write concerns. Technically you need a signed release form from any private club to legally post photos of their club here on GCA.com. This would be a lot of work for "Golf's most beloved moderator". In his own word's: He'd much rather hear a brief description of why you enjoyed the course than look at a bunch of photos!"

I agree with you concerning threads.  It seems so hard to find different subjects.  It is even difficult just to browse randomly.

Persevere with the photosbecause everybody enjoys them.    It took me ages and more than a few goes to finally get round to posting photos correctly.  I still don't know what happened to the majority of the photos I tried to post.  I have some very cool shots of Perranporth, Kington and Enville that are in limbo.

Our man Andy Levett is off to Perranporth next week.   Hopefully he will get some shots of this outstanding course.

1. It would be great if the search feature worked like Google for this site. There is so much great stuff written, but very hard to access it
2. It would also be nice if you could type in the name of a golf course and read everything written about it
3. It would also be nice is you could type in the name of a poster, get the profile he wrote about himself.
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

I agree that having other forums for other topics - ie. Rules, Pro Tours, etc. would be helpful.

How about a section where GCA participants can post their own course reviews - keep the "official" review area and have an additional section organized in the same way by Country, Architect, etc.

How about a book review section or a list of "must have" books for GCA types.

Pete,

I think you are off base here. All of Ran's reviews, the My Home Course section and "traditional" content all have pictures. Ran has always pulled them off if anyone had a problem with them, but that has been rare. Nobody took more pictures than Ran at Sand Hills.

IT IS WHAT IT IS.  Don't mess with success.. But I agree with Mike.. and have said it before as well.. More contributions.  How?

First: Make OT stand for "On Topic"

Second: Devote the finger time to finishing your My Home Course writeup, with or without pictures.  (yes, I'm pointing the finger at myself, but at least I have 6 courses I'm in the process of writing up.. getting closer..)

Third:  Devote the finger time to crafting thoughts into a "In My Opinion Piece"

Now that would give folks something better to talk about than football..

Mike,

Quite right, but Ran obtains permission from the club to post them on GCA.com; who else goes to that length?
