Who allows pull carts, push carts, trolleys?
« on: October 13, 2005, 02:06:26 PM »
When I suggested this to the "grill room guys" the other night they laughed it off.
I think  that any way that cart traffic can be reduced is a good idea.

I know the best clubs in Europe do it, but what about U.S. private clubs.

Very quickly, off the top of my head, I know that Pumpkin Ridge and Baltimore CC both do...

Of course the ones at Five Farms were fancier than my first car, so I don't know if that still counts!

Probably anywhere in Australia... even R Melbourne GC and they even allow them on the greens...

Their philosophy is that pull carts doesn't harm firm greens and they want to spray traffic so they don't hurt the collars of the greens..

 Philippe,

As you may know already, it doesn't matter what the rest of the world does. "The grill room guys" are only impressed by what American clubs are doing; and even there it is only certain clubs  ::)

Aldarra here in Seattle allows carts but no pull carts, which seems a bit strange.

The handful of private clubs here in Columbia, SC tend to allow pull carts but not provide them. I've also used mine as a guest at Holston Hills, Athens CC and Palmetto when travelling so prohibiting them doesn't appear to be widespread among private courses in the Southeasten US, although I'm sure some do. Absent a caddie corps, any prohibition of pull carts would seem quite silly IMHO.

The bias against pull-carts at many "high-end" private clubs in the US is kind of sad. In a way, that attitude epitomizes much of what is wrong about golf in the US.

French Creek has them.  They seem to be off and running in the right direction.  From populating the membership to getting the details right, it all adds up to a harmonious group.

I think if the club owns them; rents them , then it can work. If you have an older membership that wants to walk battery powered ones can help.

We have about ten battery powered pull carts here at Beechtree, people are also allowed to bring there own if they wish as well.  I think more people would use them if the cart wasn't already included in the price.  But we still have a good number of people that walk the course and use the pull carts.  The pull carts actually bring us repeat business.

Fisher's definitely has them. Pullcarts are a great legsaver for golf junkets when playing a LOT of golf. I used them in Scotland last year, and at Bandon this year.

Sunnybrook probably still does. I haven't been there in a while. I know Sandy Run has 4 bagger carts allowing 2 golfers to walk. Hidden Creek has the powered pull carts.

FYI - I read an article by an orthopedic doc who claimed that pulling/pushing your golf bag on a pull cart/trolley was tougher on your back than carrying a lightweight, dual-strap bag. The best option for your back (aside from having a caddy) would be a battery-powerered pull cart.

Bandon Dunes allows pull carts, and encourages users to pull them across the firm greens.  V. wide tires, and a v. light frame.

I had to re-read the title of this thread a couple, because I have yet to play a course in Canada that did not allow pull carts.

 David,

As a person with a bad back, I agree with that statement. I think powered carts could be the solution.

David,
Did the carts have wheels? ;) I don't have back problems, but I have never noticed any strain on my back from using a pullcart. I would think the orthopods claims were highly suspect without seeing the data. Perhaps Bill V will chime in.

When I played DuPont recently they had "push" carts. This may help the bad back problem.

In Canada all of the top private courses allow pull carts.  They are used quite extensively at my club as are the "Electronic Caddies".  But I prefer carrying and many guys who used to pull have switched over to double strap carry bags.

I have pushed for them at Lehigh and will continue to do so.  The only reason (that has any bit of merit) why they are not allowed is that it could hurt the caddie program.

You have to pick your battles but I am all for pull carts!

Pull carts are standard at virtually every golf course in Australia - the members either own their own, or at the larger clubs the club owns them and rents them out to guests (they are usually provided free for members). A lot of the older members now use the motorised versions, completed with remote control.

At my club, and many other private clubs, you are also permitted (encouraged) to take them straight across the greens in order to spread the wear away from the collars and high traffic areas. You US guys always seem to find this rather strange in my expereince, but it works just fine. I use a stand bag in a pull cart and its as light as a feather to pull around.

Mark,

They don't have to hurt the caddie program; they can be available when there are no caddies or during the walking allowed times.

Shane - traditionally US courses that allowed pull carts also put out a very strict rule NOT to take them on or near the greens... thus the incredulity of Yanks playing in Australia.

But things are coming around... at Bandon Dunes, pull-cart capital of the US or so it seems, they specifically instruct one to pull carts as you do in Australia, straight across the green, for the exact reason you state.

So there is hope for us.
