ANGC renovations
« on: September 16, 2005, 03:29:27 PM »
From the "Truth and Rumors" section of Sports Illustrated's website:

The bulldozers have disappeared and all the grass is finally back in place at Augusta National, where for the third time in four years there have been some major changes. The last part of the latest touch-up was the installation of bent grass on the seventh green, which has been slightly enlarged to allow for the possibility of a new pin placement at the right rear of the putting surface. The seventh also has new trees on the right side of the fairway, plus it's 40 yards longer now -- a mere 450-yard par four -- but that's not the longest hole in the six-hole transformation that has just been completed. That distinction belongs to the 11th hole, where the tee has been moved back 15 yards and now measures 505 yards, thus becoming the first 500-yard par-four hole on the course. The work began in June after the club closed and has been overseen by designer Tom Fazio.

What's the over-under on how many years it is before ANGC drops out of the consensus Top 10 in the US? How about the over-under on how many years it is before they hold a US Open there?

Will #4 even be playable from back there?   That's an awfully severe green for a shot of that length.

Won't #4's new tee location cut down on gallery space near #3 green too?

I would still like to challenge a certain editor who rates classical courses to place ANGC on the modern list.

How long before the tree-adding program seriously compromises the health of the turf?  ANGC is beginning to look like Sahalee.  Maybe the PGA will come knocking. ;D

When will they move the 3rd tee back 100 yds so there will no longer be a short and strategic par 4 at Augusta National.  What a joke turning #7 into a 450 yd par 4!  :P

Lots of critics of ANGC. The real culprit is the governing bodies of golf failure to regulate the technology changes. ANGC is only responding to the actions and inactions of others.

Given the state of the current professional game they are doing the best they can for the tournament while maintaining another set of tees that are very different for the membership.

I like hitting a drive and 4 iron into a par 4, heck, in past era's, Hogan hit a 1  or 2 iron into the 18th green at Merion.

It's a better test of golf. Augusta is returning to that concept.

So long as they keep the pins accessible like they did the last 2 years, the course has lost none of its excitement.
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta
