I was just reading the thread from a few years back called "best shot at Pacific Dunes" and it made me think of this topic. What shot on each course at the resort strikes the most fear in your heart as you stand above it? Feel free to offer one from each of the three courses that you've played.
Pacific Dunes - Most will probably not appreciate this, but mine is the first tee shot. I have played this course 6 times and I can only recall once where I wasn't in terrible shape to start the round. I've never felt really comfortable standing above this shot. The yardage is short on the card, but it always seems to play longer than the number indicates, even from the green tees. The first time I played the course, I clubbed down to a 6-iron, because I'm prone to hit an easy duck hook (I'm a lefty) off the first tee when I visit special courses. I hit that 6-iron right into the huge sand dune on the right that shouldn't even come into play on the hole. I've since hit a duffed 3-wood on the hole as well as a solidly struck 3-wood that carried too far and was lost in the thick stuff over the mounding in the fairway. I love this course, but I never enjoy starting the round!
Bandon Dunes - Approach at #5. Every time I've played the course, it has been directly into the summer wind. This summer when I went the tees were well up compared to the last time I visisted, so that helped a bit, but that narrow neck leading to the long green makes me nervous without fail. I think the pin has been in the back part of the green 3 of the 4 times I've played the course, and I can never get the ball far enough back there on the approach.
Bandon Trails - I've only played this one twice and it kicked my butt both times, so I've got plenty to choose from. I'm going to take the tee shot on #2. The hole looked a lot farther away than I expected. My missed shot with a mid-iron tends to be a draw that hooks a little more than expected when I don't make solid contact. I got to experience the shot missed right on this hole, and it will do nothing for my confidence when I return. I also missed left, and that wasn't much better. I've read that the place to miss this hole is short, but playing it for the first time it just doesn't look like there is that much room short of the green.
Sheep Ranch - For me it was the first tee shot. We had no idea which 150 marker was to the green we were playing when we stepped up, and the distance was visually deceiving. The landing area was extremely narrow when we played it, and I was dreading the number of lost balls I was facing until I realized there was a lot more room to land shots on the rest of the property.
