NAFFER:

Personally I like bunkers that look like little boxes with red Xs in them but I'm not too sure who else does.

I like the outside "lines" of those bunkers but I'd prefer to see the grass surrounds longer and with that a longer more natural looking grass/sand transition. Maintenance could  accomplish that and make the whole presentation look more natural. See the coloration variation in front of the green outside the bunekers? Match that too in the grass bunker surrounds. Again it would look better because it would appear more natural.

Noel,

I think they look unattractive.  The green formation looks like there will be potential divot problems too.

There are 9 bunkers on this approach - is it really necessary? Especially when the faces wash down on each of the front bunkers.

I like the way the green lays on the hilltop, but not crazy about the bunkering.   One deep one on the approach angle would have been better.

Amatuerish design.  It looks like what all the loosers of a design contest would submit.

Why not make it a big waste bunker with rough edges instead of the cookie cutter approach.

NAF,
There's nothing great about that complex of bunkers.
The terrain alone provides enough challenge, why litter the landscape with all that sand?

I think I know the hole.  If I am correct, it looks a lot different/better in person.  I would worry more about the trees all over the place. ;)

Not from Indiana.  If this hole is in Indiana, I am way off ;D

Is this Great River in Connecticut, designed by Tommy Fazio? Ron Whitten gives it an unfavorable review. It looks like the bunkers don't fit the earth well, and they present no strategic implications.

Geez, it looked like overkill from the approach (I concur with McBride's suggestion) but from the tee it's just plain ugly.

With "eye-candy," isn't the notion that the extraneous bunkers perform some kind of aesthetic purpose, if not a strategic one?

In this case I think we're talking "eye-canned spinach."

What is the length/par of the hole?

Looking at the first picture I would say it's overkill. The second view from the tee box however, makes it look like one could possibly drive it into the first set of bunkers??

Is it a short par 4?

It must look great on plans, and not that great in real life...

To link with another tread: Even if you have GPS guided dozers to follow exactly your plans, a plan is still a plan and it never perfectly translate the real landscape.

What is the length/par of the hole?

419 from tips, par 4.  410, 404 from next two tees up.

Noel,

Asking if the bunkers are attractive is asking the viewer to reveal his preference in style.

What's more important is how they function, how they integrate with the play of the hole.

Those who revile their appearance would be drooling all over themselves with praise if they had that "rough" look around the edges.

Pat-

To me it looked perfect for a green site that had a knoll (no pun intended) hole esque complex.. just my humble opinion.  While many here may prefer rustic bunkering, overkill is just plain overkill.. But then again, there is a fond affection for the Heinz 57 hole at Hollywood, no?
