The Best Golf ScreenSaver or Wallpaper Picture
« on: July 24, 2005, 10:30:35 PM »
Inspired by the resurrection of the "Cypress Infatuation" thread below, I have decided to post (now that I know how) my current and favorite computer wallpaper/screensaver.  I was looking through some of my favorite golf trip pictures and reminiscing about my experience at Cypress Point Club.  While I have several (although not nearly enough) great pictures of the CPC, the one below of the 15th is perhaps the best photograph that I have personally taken.

Perhaps as a friendly challenge, I would like to see some of my fellow GCAer's most cherished pictures with a short explanation of where (if necessary) and why.  Because of my fascination with rankings, I would also like to hear comments about these pictures with viewpoints on who’s wallpaper/screensaver is the best.  To steal some of Golf Digest’s rankings criteria I would choose to evaluate the pictures based on the following:

(1)   Architectural Significance
(2)   Esthetics
(3)   Design Variety

Bonus Points:
(4)   Lack of Humans in the Picture

IMO, there’s nothing worse than a picture of a very significant hole with awe inspiring beauty obscured by some fat ass with a bad swing wearing a worse outfit.  Unfortunately, I too have ruined many a great picture in this way and felt it would be unfair to simply eliminate a picture containing a human being from this competition.  I’m sure many of your great golf photos (like mine) are a cherished piece of history visually reminding you that you weren’t just dreaming.  That said, I haven’t seen many people in Brad Klein’s picture essays.

I’m hoping to see some wonderful “amateur” photos the likes of which we do not see enough of on this site (IMO).  Thanks!

Andrew.

Nice thread. I wonder though, if there are many screen saver pics that have a great deal of architectural significance, or is it just that I am not quite the complete GCA psycho (getting there though). I have used a few over the years but many are not from great courses or if they are they are not of especially good holes on those great courses. For me it is a case of capturing a moment when everything was working. The company was good, the setting, the time of day was perfect and lets be honest, the golf wasn’t too bad. I use pictures that sum up a sublime experience.

Here’s one I’ve used in the past. The Berkshire, blue course, perfect late evening, heather in flower, just after I nailed a drive but before I screwed up on the chip.

Marc,

That is a wonderful photo that IMO captures the essence of what makes up great golf architecture.  I love the heather lined bunkers.  Looks like an intimidating tee shot.  Good work!

Any photo of Sand Hills by Neil Regan is the best wallpaper!! Though currently I am sporting the 12th at Ballyneal from a previous post here.

Mostly because I took this one...
And I did make an eagle here against Huckaby.
Black Mesa's short par 4 14th just prior to opening.

Thinking of Bob, Rihc, Bill, George, Neil, Dr. Childs, & Tiger.

Andrew,

After a slow start to this new week, yours was the inspiration I needed.  Thanks.

Now I have to think whether I want to replace my other motivational theme WP, the "Triumvirate" (President Bush flanked by Rove and Rummy) with CPC #15.  Maybe I can find a way to superimpose my heroes on the CPC background.
