Best Invention in Modern Golf
« on: July 10, 2005, 03:37:05 PM »
To add to Sean Reehoorn's post of the worst inventions in golf...what are some of the positive inventions/ideas we've seen come out in the last 25 or so years?

Of course we could say some of the great new course designs such as Sand Hills, Bandon, etc. but I'm curious to hear what people like about what's happened in golf and where it is headed...

Lob Wedge
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Solid golf balls with feel and stand bags.

I have an old bag in my garage from my days at Nike - a very, very light bag, and I forgot what a pain it was to drop it on the ground and keep picking it up.  Of course when you shoot anywhere from 82-102, that can be a lot of picking up  :)

Golf cart with headlights and side panels to keep out the rain.

Seriously, big headed drivers or double-strap stand bags - can't decide.

I can't stand double-strappers.  I guess it is just me.

No question that steel shafts and hardcover balls are up there.  My dad used to but severe smiles in his in the 70s.  That's unheard of now.

I vote for the modern rubber grips ... I never was a fan of leather grips (I am always fearful of leting one of my hickories slip out of my hands on the follow through ...) ...

ah well yes, just so not idiotic with a fresh trout on the end of the line...and not much more idiotic than smashing a little white ball around for 3 hrs...

John

I note that Kris Kerr heralds from New Zealand.  Fishing for carp around an English pond WOULD be standing on the shore like an idiot.  But, seeking a trout on the rivers and streams of NZ would probably be as close an experience to a Doak 6+ as you can get without a golf course.

I have only done it once (in Austalia's Snowy River area) but I will always remember it.  You see a lot of stream in one day.

While not a modern invention anymore, Tillie thought the flask was a terrific aid to his design efforts, and TomPaul agrees... ;D

18 holes as opposed to 22.

Otherwise we would now be looking at 9000 yard golf courses...

A double edged sword - GPS, for the designer, not the player - in that case it should be placed on the worst thread....

Not sure if 38 years ago qualifies as modern, but...the golf cart filled with two Playboy bunnies serving players around the course during the club tournament.  I was only a caddie -- damn! -- but those images are etched in my memory.

Waterproofs that actually allow you to play

Steel woods???to bring golf more to the masses, although I still wish we were hitting persimmons
Cavity backs for the same reason and same self preference

The emergence of one Tiger Woods..also golf to the masses

A new generation of architects who seem to "get it"
