Welcome to town!  If you can take the awful traffic, there is alot to do here.  ;)
Unfortunately, unless you belong to one of the private clubs, you will have to do alot of driving to get to some great daily fee courses.  There are some nice ones north and some others south, but not too many intown (Chastain is an interesting layout, but too much foot traffic).  
  What part of town do you live in?  
   Maybe Bob Crosby, Phil the Author and some others could chime in later.

I live in Sandy Springs.  I am a member of Atlanta Country Club.  I'm in Athens during the week usually; but, I like to be in Atlanta as often as time permits.

Where do the other Atlanta GCAers play?

I currently reside in Avondale Estates but I will be in the Cherokee County area on a daily basis soon during the development of the GaTech Alumni Club.

Are you working on the GaT. project?  I'm somewhat familiar with it, since I live about 5 miles away, play golf about a mile away, and have an old friend/coworker/golf buddy whose property adjoins the project!
If so, when will course construction start, and when is the opening date?

I publish an annual guide to every golf course in Georgia that you can play.  There are 101 golf courses in the metro Atlanta area which have public access...

Carlyle, I definitely know your name and feel like I should be able to place your face, but I cannot. I (or to be more accurate, my dad) was a member at ACC from approx. 1983-93, and that's where I grew up playing my golf. Next time I'm in Atlanta - which might be a while, as I was just home for Christmas - do you mind if I look you up? I'm dying to see what the place looks like these days...

I am new to GCA but not to Atlanta.  Where have you played?  There is a considerable amount of good courses.  There are plenty that are a waste of time also.

I have played a few courses in the ATL area and surrounds in the past.  Peachtree, Cusscowilla, Port Armour, National Reynolds, Great Waters Reynolds, Hard Labor Creek on ur way to Augusta Practice Round, Windemere, Southerness(?), The Frog and Hampton Village and few of the cheaper city courses like Mystery Valley which I play with my aunt...its cheap.

I would like to play a few more older courses but its hard to get on some of the older private clubs.  Worked on the Hawks Ridge course after college...I would like to return there for a round!

Oh! Charlie Yates short course next to East Lake is fun, quick, and cheap...you can play unlimited if you walk.  Its great practice for wedges and approach irons since it has alot of par 3's and short par 4's!

How is Hard Labor out in Rutledge?   I used to play it some when I was a kid with my Dad but not in 15 years or so.  I hear that it has improved in condition.  It is a good course for a state park.

I am new to GCA, do area GCAer get together for a round?  If so, email me at bndpeyer@hotmail.com.  I play 12 to 15 times a year but enjoy playing with people who love the game.

I live in Kennesaw (about to move to Acworth, though).  I
play out of Chapel Hills C.C. and Mirror Lake C.C.; some of the
best private club values in the state.  Some other good public
courses in the metro area include Cobblestone in Acworth and
Oak Mountain way out in Carrollton.  One to avoid, though, is
Bear Creek in Douglasville.

Keith, is Bear Creek the new one associated with Nicklaus? I have heard that there was a new development underway (but thought it was in Dahlonoga).  Just curious. After a cup of coffee, I will try to get a list together of some, IMHO, good values and some dog tracks in the area!!

Keith mentions Cobblestone. Maybe the best public course on the northside.

White Columns is the other big name public course on the northside. I think Cobblestone is the more interesting of the two.

Less to chose from on the southside, though Mike Young's Wolf Creek is a nice course. And the price is right.

Rob,

Bear Creek was originally started as a "golden bear" design,
which, if I understand correctly is the section of Nicklaus
design that Jack actually has no involvement with in terms of
design.  At some point in the process Nicklaus Design dropped
the course and the pieces were picked up someone else and
the course was finished.  The course probably never would
have been very good, but in this case the result is really
bad.  There are significant wetlands issues, not to mention
fairways that repel balls into the forest, cart paths that
increasingly come into play, and all this on a piece of land
that is very much on the sever side for a golf course.

I think that the Nicklaus course you might be thinking of is
Birch River, which I believe opened recently, though I haven't
heard anything about it yet.

Another semi-private on the northside worth playing is Crooked Creek. I've played it several times and, especially from the back tees, is a good course. The green complexes are well done.

I'm just up the road in Greenville, SC. LOT'S of nice courses between here and Atlanta. Also, I am a member of a local Club Corp business club that provides playing privileges at the following Atlanta area courses:

Bear's Best - Suwanee
Eagle's Landing - Stockbridge
Laurel Springs - Suwanee
Nicklaus Golf Club At Birch River - Dahlonga

Michael, you should try to find our friend Turboe.  He is from that area as well and likes to play quite a bit.  

I went to college at Furman, and am wondering if you had a chance to play there recently.  I love the layout, and they have recently undergone major renovations.  The fact that there is a championship golf course on campus was a major reason my GPA wasn't as strong as it should have been!! :D

Also, there is a "Cliffs" development in Traveler's Rest, and of course, the GCC Chanticleer course.

I played Bear Creek in a tournament and it stinks.  I live in Duluth and like both Reunion and The Georgia Club.  Reunion is good, it has about 13 or 14 really good holes, there are a couple that are weak and two nearly identical par 4 back to back.  The Georgia Club is nice, with extremely wide fairways, it is a nice facility.

I have a list of courses in Atlanta as my favorites which run as a good cross-section:

Creekside in Hiram (great fun, tough)
UGA course in Athens (long from tips)
White Columns (great shape)
North Fulton (great routing)
Mystery Valley (routing is good also)

Anyone have any input on these that haven't been discussed?
