Dordogne

After a rather wet fortnight in Dornoch and North Berwick last August my family refused to allow me any input into the destination for  this year’s summer holiday and  booked a gite between Bordeaux and Bergerac.
However they are happy for me to bring my clubs so I’m looking for suggestions for a round or two. So far I’ve come up with Donald Steel’s Chateau Vigiers and Bill Coore’s Golf du Medoc. (I played the latter in 2003 and was slightly disappointed, partly because it was overwatered and also because my expectations were very high due to Coore’s reputation on this site. However, I’d be happy to go back).
The courses I’d really like to see are Hossegor and Chiberta, but I think they are too far away.
Are there any others I should be considering?

Seignosse and Moliets are two good tracks. Unfortunately not too far away from Hossegor. So the distance problem remains the same :'( Maybe having 4 courses to choose from instead of 2 makes the journey slightly more worthwhile. If you venture down to Chiberta, Chantaco used to be a good course as well.
Pay attention that during the month of August most of the good tracks in south west france are booked solid. Good tournaments are played in Hossegor (grand prix des landes), Chiberta or Biarritz.

ViaMichelin forecast a 3 hour trip ... http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/gbr/dyn/controller/ItiWGPerformPage?E_wg=210505013lS10J405012164649396685ITIWG7110133gbr006p1053102d101127102011041424000bQmVyZ2VyYWM07MjQxMDA0yOTcsIFJ1ZSBOZXV2ZSBkJyBBcmdlbnNvbg11000122h10112b102411041424000cc2VpZ25vc3Nl0cYXF1aXRhaW5l0nZ29sZiBkZSBzZWlnbm9zc2U12091142j4118013010010072005012039.004-1.00110001001001001001001003gbr011&stat=ambiguous_iti&dtmDeparture=12%2F01%2F2005&strStartChoice=0&x=7&y=6

Chateau Vigiers is a nice place to stay, but the course is rather mediocre.  Unfortunately you have selected a poor area for golf.  The upside is the you are in the best area for wine.  In my experience, Golf du Medoc is the best place around Bordeaux.  When are you going?

If you are at least in part a lover of wine, then horses for courses.

I am a lover of wine, but would go without it for a week if need be in an area of the greatest golfing. Around Bordeaux, any round of golf means at least three hours not wine touring the home of Cabernet (and Merlot etc). And if you play early before opening times, you didn't imbibe enough the night before.

Oliver,
www.tinyurl.com was one cool item brought to my attention from hanging out here.
Give it a try.

Thanks gents. It's not an area I would have chosen for a golf trip but it will be good to get out for a couple of rounds. Curiously, when I played Golf du Medoc it was the same time of year, August, but teeing off about 5pm I had the course to myself. Perhaps the members were off on their own jollies and the tourists pursuing the red ale.
Cheers.

Andy

I have been GDM in May, June and July (always in connection with red ale trips).  I have never seen the course crowded.  Its not a bad track for the price and for King's golf.

Why does this post show up so strange in my browser?

Anyway: Andy, a good stop for the family is Perigueux. The course is - well, not that great and even worse with the water, but the shopping and cafés are a plus, when negotiating with the family.

But why not give Golf du Medoc a second chance? I would...

I was always planning to play GDM again Tom. That picture says a lot about the course - interesting angle for the tee-shot, aesthetically appealing and strategically sound bunkering, the peace only broken by the gentle sound of a sprinkler emptying half the Garonne onto the 18th green and its surrounds.  ::)
