If you could only play the works of 5 architects...
« on: November 28, 2004, 08:09:14 PM »
...who would they be?

Jeff Fortson brought up this criteria on the RTJ thread and I thought it was fairly interesting, especially considering the influx of new architects.

MacKenzie, Tillinghast, MacDonald/Raynor, Thomas, Coore/Crenshaw.

I have only played one Doak course.  I plan on playing 3 or 4 more this year and I have a gut feeling he'd make my list once I have played more of his.

I think I'd go with:

Ross - just fun to play; rarely loose balls; great greens
Colt - have only played Portrush, but Paul Turner's pictures look awesome
MacKenzie - if the rest are like CPC and Pasatiempo, good enough for me
Old Tom Morris - Prestwick, Muirfield, RCD, Dornoch
Doak - still think about Lost Dunes on a weekly basis; can't wait to see the rest

Another question which I would like to ask:

which 5 dead architects and 5 live architects would you  like to play the most
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Talk about big world theory.....just as long as it ain't in your world theory....How can you pick five architects whose work is so alike you might as well have only picked one and then blow on about your theory.....What do you have against Dye....even redanman picked him...

It would be silly for me to pick most of the 'greats' as I'd still have no access to most of their work at least in the US. There's a big difference between 'If you could only play...'  and 'If you could play only...'

If I could only play, I'll pick-
Doak (Gives me vacation golf)
Foster (Gives me local golf)
Fazio (Gives me golf anywhere)
Old Tom (Gives me GB&I Golf)
Dye (See Fazio)

If I could play only, I'll pick
MacKenzie
CB Mac
Flynn
Doak
Old Tom

There was a great thread a while ago which talked about this in terms of narrowing it down. One of the better topics w/ a lot of details.

Thanks to those who picked me; I'm flattered.

No one has mentioned it so far, but the interesting part of choosing modern architects is that there are "futures" involved ... you won't get any additional MacKenzie courses to play, but you don't know what contemporary architects still have left in their quivers.

Can't tell you where yet, but I hope that my future includes the property I've been walking around the last two days!

Ross (sheer volume)
Mackenzie (really, if one had CPC and VCoM, what else would you need?)
Doak (Kape Kiddnappers, Sebonack
C&C (Friars, Cuscowilla, etc.)
Raynor (Fishers)

Like I've said in previous posts I have not had the pleasure of playing some of the very best. But of the architect's whose work I have seen, here is my list:

Tillie - Ridgewood CC and Bethpage Black are two of my favorites.
Ross - Love the understated nature of the designs.
Doak - Pacific Dunes changed the way I look at modern courses.
Strantz - The 18th hole at Caledonia holds a special place in my heart.
Fazio - I belong to a Fazio course, and you gotta stick up for your guy!

Harry Colt - I believe he was probably the best ever

Alister Mackenzie - From Melbourne to ANGC to Crystal Downs to Cypress...tough to beat

William Flynn - Probably the highest percentage of first rate holes of any architect.

Tom Doak - His courses tend to bring an involuntary smile to my face.

John Kosydar - So I could continue to go back annually to play his only design; a 9-hole, 2239 yard, circa 1961 gem where I learned the game at age 13.  It keeps me grounded.

Doak, but there are really about 5 more that need to be on here. 10 would provide a much more complete feeling

Pretty interesting that nobody has chosen Crump, Fownes, or Neville (and he's done more than one)

Dave,

There is a great deal of Flynn at Merion.  We have a large amount documentation of the architectural history and loads of Flynn drawings (1916, 1924, 1930, and 1934 Flynn drawings).  Unfortunately, the guys involved never sat down and made clear who did what.  At least we know that during Wilson's declining year (1924) and after his death in 1925 that the changes can safely be attributed to Flynn with editing by Wilson if he was fit enough.  If some of the folks in the know at Merion can call it a Wilson/Flynn course, I'd vote that you can include Merion in your list of allowable courses.  That is if my vote counts for anything  ;)

John B:

You world class idiot, golf architecture lunkhead and perhaps even infidel! You obviously don't understand my "Big World" theory any better than your counterpart in myopia (and that's not the golf course) redanman, before I just clued him in on it and he wholehearted agreed with it----only to accuse his old and dear friend, TommyN, of completely rejecting it.

My Big World theory on golf course architecture doesn't in the slightest depend on what I personally like. It merely depends on the idea that there should be loads of difference out there in type, style, looks and playabilities that others like! If there's architecture out there that I hate and others like and if they hate what I like---fine---that's just fine---it's a big world out there and there must be something for everyone!

You, you, you lunkhead! Listen, I'm a fair minded man but if I ever catch Bill Coore even thinking about building a waterfall on a golf course, he's a dead man!

McKenzie - Allows Royal Melb to name just one.

Hackett - Give me Carne, Enniscrone and Waterville

Old Tom - Gives me Royal Dornoch.  While I'm there I might just be able to do some research and find a long lost document that mentions an involvement at Brora.  If I can't find it I'll forge it(Apologies to Braid).  Then gives me Brora as well.

Colt - Portrush et al

Doak/Clayton - I know technically they aren't together but Mike's name allows me onto Port Fairy by virtue of his renovations.  Together they give me Barnbougle, St Andrews Beach.  The best of the modern architects with a few courses in striking distance of Melbourne.
