RTJ's Best holes
« on: November 28, 2004, 04:07:01 AM »
Because RTJ was so prolific in his output, there must be many great holes worthy of recognition. I have found that even on his most generic, formulaic, contrived, and aweful courses that there were always a couple of special holes.

Montauk:

7th hole is a classic Par 4.5 that uses water near the left side of the green to protect an easy 2 shot. Slightly blind off the tee, and an ability to run it up on the right side.

12th hole, 179 par 3 that sits nicely at the top of a hill, lots of trouble if you miss.

4th hole, 400 yards - play a fade off the tee and miss the bunker and avoid OB right; green  has 2 bunkers with a narrow opening that sits up from the fairway.

Cornell

The problem with Cornell it is difficult to call any of the holes "very good", most are good. However, I like the Par 3 2nd which plays along a wetlands area and the short 4 10th which is well bunkered.

I mentioned the 11th as RTJ quirk the other day due to its narrow green and landing area set in the woods coming from a wide open landing area.

The double-dogleg 4th or 13th(they may have reversed the nines) at Dorado Beach East.  Great use of two ponds playing toward the ocean.  Also, two giant palm trees in the fairway that really work.

Have not seen Montauk in many years but Mike is right about those holes.  4 is always into the wind it seems.  12 looks very similar to pictures of one of the original holes on the course (Wexler book? could it be in the same place?) .  Also 7 had the hill in front of the tee shaved down long ago takeing away a little of the blindness.

#13 at the Dunes is one of the great Par 5's anywhere.

Jim,

I concur on the13th at Dunes. I also found the 17th a very good par three that is not of the drop shot variety. 18th at the Dunes has multiple tee options with a rumway tee feature.

I also think that 17 and 18 at Golden Horseshoe are very good finishing holes.

The 13th hole on the Cashen course is one of my favorites. 17th at Cashen is also very good.

I haven't visited The Dunes, but I had an immediate reaction to the three hole diagrams posted above.

Check out the bunker scheme around all three greens. Bunkers tight right and left and the entrance to the putting surface, and another rear-centre. This might be a coincidence, that these three holes with a similar bunker scheme at the green are the ones with diagrams posted above?

I'm not being criticial. Only hoping my comment will generate some additional comments from those who have seen The Dunes course, and also some further dicussion about RTJ's architecture.
