Ralph Livingston,
It is drawn as a Driver/Brassie then Brassie/Spoon/Long Iron shot.

Where do you see that ?

With what was being done at some of the "Championship" courses of the day, 471 is in there with the other long par 4's.

Could you cite five examples of 471 to 500 yard par 4 holes circa 1926 ?

The left route was for the better player that could carry a drive 200-210 and the right was a bailout for the lesser player. Or the right could be for a really strong top player driving the ball closer to 300 yards that could get to mid-Iron range for a second shot.

Into a prevailing, good wind, on bermuda grassed fairways, with equipment circa 1926 what player could execute the shots you describe above.  Could you name any players from that era that were capable of those shots under those circumstances ?

"Not only would it add yardage, but it would bring the approach directly into the prevailing winter wind,....."

Patrick:

You can't just go around blithely saying things like that left fairway would add yardage---you have to say how much yardage so I can tell how much of a blowhard golf architeture analyst you're trying to be today.

Maybe you don't know any more about geometry than you do about golf architecture but this shouldn't be that hard for you to figure out. Just look at those "shot lines" on that drawing. If you look at them closely you can see they form a perfect OBTUSE triangle standing on its ear and even if you don't know much about triangles I figure it's got to be  snap for you to figure out the dimensions and the added yardage off an OBTUSE triangle--that just has to be right up your alley!

Pulled this up searching for "channel hole". Pretty funny TEPaul. Maybe Pat missed that last bit though. FYI, the hole is 25 yards longer (265 231, 496) going for the island.

What was the relationship between the Lido channel hole and the Mackenzie prize hole CBM judged in Country Life?

I think this hole is a bit of a dud in that the alternate fairway is the longer route and has little reward for the risk, unfortunately.  Green contours just add to the unsuitability of the left side play.  Only fool the player once?  Lots of realestate to do that little joke.

What is the Riviera hole with the restored "alternate fairway" (no one uses) and why is Flynn's better than Thomas's?
