Afterall, they departed from tradition when they went to the shortened, same day, playoff to decide the winner of the British Open.

Pat,
  There was a heavy rain with lightning late one day that forced the golfers off the course for a while. I think the decision to start the playoff from 17 that day was based on usable pins. The crews worked hard and fast to dry the greens. Below is a picture of the 18th as they finish drying the pin location prior to resumption of play.
