Sidewalls and the 12th at Deal
« on: September 21, 2004, 01:53:51 PM »
The 12th at Deal has an interesting green complex which I have yet to see on any other links..there are sidewalls on both sides of the green that will aid in the approach to the green.. you can use a member touch to get close to pins or use like a side stop.

And what a difficult recovery shot you'll have if you land outside the side walls!

Thanks for the pic.

I always wondered if this green was as quirky as my memory recalls it .

My friend who I was caddying for in 1997 Amatuer , ended up on the right side of the green with the pin on the right .

Only way to get to it , was up the bank on the other side and bring it back down.

I laughed because he never often asked for my thoughts on his shot selection .

Almost pulled it off as well .

Noel,

I played with Tiger Bernhardt some time ago there, and he banked it from the right side to a few feet - possibly the only shot to play? but quite a safe one really...  left is harder dont you think, if OB doesnt catch you.

Back in March during a 4 somes match my partner miraculously left me with our 3rd shot on top of the left side wall--about 10 yards from the bunker).. the pin was where you see it in the picture.. I had 3 options..Hit a putt down the sidewall and see how fast it gained speed and let it get close or 2) hit the putt hard and let it go partly up the right sidewall to lose speed and come back down or 3) hit a flop shot.  Since the other team was 5 feet from birdie I took the stupid option, i clipped a flopper to 2 feet.  Curiously when I hit 2 putts to try the other options, the one that almost holed it was using the right sidewall as a backstop.

Noel- I take it these sidewalls are not seen on another hole @Deal?(or anywhere)

It does remind me of, in concept, to some of the greenside moundings at Pinon Hills. The difference with those PH mounds is they are circular in nature, so they turn, or run-out of bankable real estate. Making the exact spot to bank the shot, much smaller. While sending the less accurate shot, in a completely different, ususally undesirable, direction. Also, they are not maintained to a grass height, where putting onto them would be an option. What a pity!

Come to think of it, Lou Duran's Famous 14th hole bunker shot at Black Mesa, utilized similar sidewalls and creativity.

Strantz has sidewalls similar to this (not in the safe skateboard halfpipe configuration as this) on a few of his courses...I played a shot into the bank that came back on #17 at MPCC the other day.  Oakland Hills also has some of this, although the camera angles didn't necessarily show it...but you could see how some of the balls were rolling.
