Northwood Golf Club: What Did I Miss?
« on: September 21, 2004, 09:52:46 AM »
Tooled right by this course in the Russian River Valley on Saturday.  Only saw one green from the road and it looked like the genuine article.  Opted not to spend marital capital.  A wise decision?

Mike, it was a wise conservation of marital capital.  Oh, Northwood is good fun and they do sell it as a MacKenzie design (which it is originally, but how much of such is left is debatable).  But in the end it's just 9 holes, fun if you have a couple free hours, but not worth a separate trip and definitely not worth making your wife wait to get to Korbel or the many other nearby wineries.

Korbel

Hey, Korbel is fun, and it's the closest winery to Northwood (I think).

But your point is well taken!

I am glad to see I did not miss anything of note on my passes through the area. I do find the redwoods nice as are the many modern hippies as well as the winneries. Was Mike on his way to Bandon?

Mike-

I am guessing the green you saw from the road was #8 which is the best hole on the course and the best preserved of what Mackenzie has done there. The rest of the course is not much to speak about in terms of the remaining design (a couple of holes holes have houses literally 5 yards off the fairway). The other memorable facet of this course is that it has the tallest trees I have ever seen on a golf course and some of the tallest I have ever seen period.

Also,
When you estimate distance surrounded by those redwoods you are very off! Worth playing just for the stroll through a redwood park.Alas, much of Mackenzie is gone.
