6, 6, 6 Layout?
« on: September 17, 2004, 03:16:27 PM »
My assistants and I were talking today of any courses in our past experience with a 6, 6, 6 layout.  That is a course with 6 par threes, 6 par fours, 6 par fives.  None of us could come up with any such courses.  I imagine there are quite a few, can you name any such courses?

That was quick.  What is your feeling towards the 6, 6, 6 layout?

Mississippi Dunes, Cottage Grove, Minnesota.

Don't care for the golf course --  but not because of its 6-6-6-ishness.

Seems to me 6-6-6 can be just fine, so long as there's plenty of variation within each 6.

Dan,

As I have said to a couple of guys from my place of employment who play the Dunes all the time: If I had to play that course every day, I'd start playing tennis.

Goodness I hate that place.

My initial impression is that it's really, really hard to come up with 4 interesting par fives, much less six of them.

I believe the old course at the homestead is a 666, although i havent played it.  i always look forward to par 5s (a chance to cheat par by reaching in 2 or at least having a short wedge shot in)  and par 3s (a chance to hole in 1, or when i think realistically, an immediate drama hole), more than par4s, so i think i would enjoy a 666.  Im not sure par 5s or par3s would be any more prone to lack of variety than par 4s.  In fact a 666 course would have the maximum variety possible as far as variety in the par of the holes.

Any course that isn't hung-up on being a "championship" golf course should consider this.

For one; The one shotters are an important aspect in tournament golf, and in gaming.

Also, the ability to have (or create) short par 5's, is a real hoot, for your mid-range handicap golfer.

My home course Riverview's backnine (Baxter Spann '99) is 3-3-3 and is the best nine holes in the region.

Raintree in Pembroke Pines, FL has a 6-6-6 set-up.  The course was designed by Charlie Mahannah and is a poster child for everything some people hate about Florida golf.  Flat as an ironing board the course is completely surrounded by water and every hole has water on it.  Most of the holes have one entire side flanked by water and some holes have water on both sides.

Scroll down this page to see some pics and the scorecard. Notice the amount of water on the holes depicted on the scorecard.

Spring Hill CC in Albany, Oregon has 6 of each.  Interestingly, there are no back to back holes of the same par.  There was a thread about this 6,6,6 subject a few months ago, but I was unable to find it doing a quick search.

I'm no supertious man or anything but isn't that numerical progression---666---a sign of the Devil or something?   ;)
