Marty, were some of these inspired by Frank Lloyd Wrong? ::)

One might get the impression that a certain design firm was specializing in these buildings and the lead architect was a drop out from Talliesan.

Unc,
There's clearly a Usonian Prairie School influence to many of them, isn't there??
I keep waiting to see Lucy and Desi on one of those (I assume) Lime Green sofas...

Marty, you really have a keen eye for classic fashion and color.  Your photo next to your posts (which I have blown up and have hanging in the family portrait gallery) demonstrates an affinity for the 50s color set, with your lime green shirt and blended matching tie pattern, and 50s archie-engineer coifurre.  Were you ever one of the Talliesin associates? You are one happening dude! ;D 8) :o

50s archie-engineer coifurre

Dearest Uncle,
You of all people should know that my coiffure (sp.?) is purely genetic and most certainly not by design nor by noogies(?) over the drafting board from FLW himself!

It is interesting, isn't it?

It wasn't at all clear then. But it is now. As night follows day, the same mindset that would build ranch-style clubhouses in the 50's and 60's would also (a) "modernize" a lot of Golden Age architecture and/or (b) construct countless truly awful new courses.

I am old enough, however, to remember when that look seemed really, really cool. In fact, the house I grew up in looks much like one of your photos.

Bill:

Those are wonderful clubhouses compared with the 1950's flat-roofed palaces built here in New England. The impracticality has lead to a few caving roofs but the damage has not ruined the obtuse lines of the structures themselves.
These buildings are so ugly that even fires avoid them. Pity...

I asked this question a while back in another thread. I was trying to recall that 50’s DIY TV programme where this psycho took a delightful Victorian house and systematically ripped out every piece of character in the place so that the yuppies  could put it all back again 40 years later. Definitely symptomatic of some sort of post war reactionary thing.

Barry Buckle or something his name was.
