Engineers, although not in the 19th hole sense.

Hamilton Farm and Kinloch are the two best ones I've seen.

From what I understand, the Ambush at Lajitas in West Texas has an extra hole in the middle of the round.  It's a par three over the Rio Grande, I believe, with the green in Mexico.

Scarboro -the only Tillinghast course still in operation in Canada has a 138 yard 19th hole. The green is adjacent to the Clubhouse patio. Originally built as a hole to settle bets, the green slopes severely back to front, and is very slick.End up above the hole and you will make 2 or 5. Lots of fun sitting on the patio watching balls roll off the front of the green.

I think an extra or bag or tie settler hole can be a wonderful thing but it has to fit in really well and in a routing sense just like the other holes and also be a really interesting hole, in my opinion. Just some extra or practice hole doesn't necessarily do that.

MikeC:

That extra hole at Lehigh seems to me to be the latter. It's not in a particularly interesting place and it doesn't look very interesting to me either. It's just sort of wedged in there between holes. I can't even imagine how one gets there or when or why they'd play it.

I liked the one that was in design only at the Ardrossan project as it could be played two ways---as an extra or bag hole after playing the regular 18th (a long par 4) and also as the green to a long par 5 18th hole iteration from the normal 18th tee. That gave a golfer on the 18th tee basically three very separate choices and the good news was if you played to that green in any iteration you'd be right at the clubhouse.

Tom H or Rich G, doesn't or didn't Stanford have an extra hole...a short par 3 adjacent to the 18th?  It's been a while since I've played there but I seem to remember a short hole off to the right.

Kevin:

Excellent memory re Stanford.  It does indeed have an extra hole - it's to the right of 18 fairway, and on your left as you drive in. It's about 150, up hill, and is used primarily for short game practice... that is, players drop balls all over the fairway and near the green and play them out.  BUT... it was used as part of the normal 18 last year when the bridges were being rebuilt and there was no way to get to the 14th hole...

Come to think of it, the hole would serve as a very nice 19th, bet-settling hole... it is right there near 18 after all...

Hillcrest CC in Bartlesville, OK has a warm up hole.  It was the original first hole in the original routing of the course.

World Woods near Tampa has three extra holes which can be played as a warm-up.  A Par 5, Par 4 and a Par 3.
Pretty Neat.

Pinehurst #2 has an extra hole behind the #9 green that runs up to one of the residences of the Tufts family.  It's no longer in play, but it used to be used to get Mr.Tufts up to his residence between 9 holes for lunch.

That's a great example. No sense wasting all that distance without playing on the way!

It has been quite a few years since this thread was going and some new additions.
Lost Farm down in Tasmania has 2 extra par 3 holes. After 13 and 18. 13 is crafted into there with quite a hike to the tee box IIRC. 18 is a nice out in the open a the foot of the clubhouse.

Not sure how you would classify Ohoopee; 22 holes that can be played in 2, 18 hole routings.

Is the extra par-3 hole at the far end of the Championship course at Cruden Bay ever used?

Old Sandwich has a 19th hole that's a nice, short par 3. Even better than that is the Rock, which is a cool idea. They installed a piece of turf next to the clubhouse, right on the edge of a pond/lake. There is a big rock sticking out of the lake, about 140 yards away. You pull out a crap ball and bet on who can hit the rock. Really fun way to end your round.

Streamsong has a short par-3 over a pond between the clubhouse and the courses called the "BYE" hole.

The European has 20 of course. One of them (7a) I nominated as one of the best par-3’s in Ireland. The other is almost as good.

Seven has a magnificent green but the tee ball on 12a might be my favorite shot on the course.

Common on Melb sandbelt courses these days.... Metropolitan, Kingston Heath both have 'em and probably some of the others.

Only course I've played that I know of was Columbine CC which had two par-three 7th holes that were both maintained.

On the sandbelt Victoria, Huntingdale, Yarra Yarra, Victoria and Woodlands also have 19th holes
Metro and KH now use theirs in tournaments.

Wykagyl has a 19th hole for settling bets.  Looks like 75 yards on Google Earth.  Takes you toward the clubhouse.

Also, Gil Hanse, Jim Wagner, with help from Brad Faxon, are building 20 holes on the new “Match” course at Jonathan’s Landing in Jupiter Fl.  The extra holes will be flexible, for practice, shootouts, and also create shorter 7 hole loops on both the front and back nines.  Pretty creative……
