Jay Morrish Retires, Cites Technology
« on: March 29, 2004, 09:41:58 AM »
A little sidenote to the Dick Wilson/ASGCA thread, perhaps?  Longtime ASGCA member Jay Morrish has decided to call it quits, according to Golfdom Magazine (see link below).  He laments the effects of technology and the focus on length in golf course design.

Thought some of you might find it interesting.

"Morrish is concerned that the classic courses are being put out to pasture by technology."

-To me, this does not seem like a rational reason to stop doing things going forward.

"..says he’s not having much fun anymore because of the length issue."

- If length makes it more difficult to design, doesn't that just mean the challenge of comign up with a good design has increased which could make it more fun?

- Or, for him, is it just time to retire?  I can't blame anyone who is 67 from wanting to retire; I would like to retire much sooner if I am able.

Alternatively, the quotes could be taken out of context, and the non-quoted text could just be wrong.

Will this event lead to a mass exodus of retirements of really OLD guys like Jeff Brauer, Ian Andrews and Forrest Richardson? Oh, I hope not! ;D

Tommy,

You have me laughing. Don't I have to do something that somebody remembers first before I can retire! ;D

Steve,

He is very pissed off with technology because he likes to design on the inside of the dogleg, and he's tired of having the wrong distance after only three years of technology "improvements" This is a factor, but only part of a whole decision.

He also suffers with a chronic bad back

I retired 20 years ago. Then I became a golf course architect.

As for Jay, I applaud his will to slow down and take it easy. I would be surprised if he did not do "a few things" in his retirement that might have to do with golf courses.

When I think of Morrish and Weiskopf the first thing that comes to mind is the fact that they are great at adding fun 260 to 330 yard holes which are usually the best ones on the course. Many cases they added several of these in 18 holes. Not many are as good at that short hole design as they are.
