I could probably write a few volumes on just the landing zone
of this hole. But, besides being worthy, as Gene's post exemplifies,
what should be most educational to the pampered, is the turf.
Notice carefully all the textures and colors of the fairway grasses.
The clumpiness of the transition into the dunes.
All these "little" variables, dictate the proper playing of the hole.
The short Par 5 12th, with an in course
OB on the right,
(to stop corner crossing over the 13th, for safety) is as wind effected as any hole on the continent.
Look on any map and find
the last curl of the south tip of
the Monterey bay and that's
where this hole resides.
The large hump in the landing zone
is just one of the subtle features
that decides fate.
The rolling fairway allows
the golfer to either use to great effect,
the wind, to get home in two.
Or as a mentor-like nemisis,
the lie will cause the golfer to play prudently.
The false front oval green
forces perfection on approach
whether it be from 225, or 40.
Day in day out,
the pitches to this green,
from 80-20 yds in,
are the toughest shot demands
on the golf course.
