I appreciate the greens at  Garden City, that are often

subtle extensions of the fairway.

I feel that Flynns  Country Club near  Cleveland is an

excellent routing that gently embraces its site.  In addition

his  nicely shaped greens there  are nuanced

but interesting.

Springdale, a pleasant (not great)  Flynn design in

Princeton also highlights  his talent for  engaging

understatement.

Pete  Dye's   Golf  Club.........

In comparison to much of his  later work, the  superb

architecture at   New  Albany   Ohio  is  rather  subtle.

I agree in reference to Merion and Seminole  - many holes play harder than they appear -terrific green complexes and subtle but effective elevation changes.

To me,  architecturally subtle courses imply a certain intimacy;  smaller scale courses that were designed to fit perfectly into their natural settings.  Courses like PH#2, Winged Foot, Oakland Hills all have that "big", expansive feel that do not hit me as being of a subtle nature, although I know the more you play them the more subtle characteristics may become apparent.  My votes go for Merion  and Crystal Downs.

Talking Stick is on the most boring piece of land.  It might be the most fun to play course in suburban Phoenix.
