Good Bunkering or Over-Kill?

Jim,
What if it was unraked, natural to the site sand that was meant to not only be imposing but offer a "suitable" (Tough but fair ) shot at making recovery?

What is your opinion of teeing off over 5 foot-high wall gorse bushes around the same distance?

While I'm not a fan of crushed white marble and feel that it has no place in golf, unless the golf course was built on a former marble quarry (Oh No! Here we go with that quarry-thing again! )and it couild have been avoided here. still, I have to say that the bunkering is creative and inventive and in the mold of MacKenzie's prescription of natural-looking shapes and irregular lines.

Nice comparison Tommy.

I love the bunker edges at the Purgatory course and the fescue grasses I think look great, but I feel there is a few too many.  I would like to see the green complex as well but the hole looks very good otherwise.

The second photo looks like Fazio's Pelican Hill course.  I assume the south course.  I don't know which hole number or the lengths of each hole as I haven't played there.  The hole doesnt appear to be real long, can you give us exact yardages Tommy.

Give us some more information Tommy about this hole and the rest of the course.

Nice guess Josh.

It is #6 @ Pelican Hills South course and it is around 115 yards to the left green while the other green is something like 98. (I'm going off of memory)

I have to say that the hole is wonderfully framed and a true environmental nightmare as left of all of it is a 200 foot cliff that buffers it all from the ocean.  You can't see the ocean from the hole either unless you were to get up on top of the rocks that are behind the tee (fake rocks I might add) and look down.

Yes, Fazio produced a great experience here when considering the logistic nightmare of having to deal with the California Coastal Commission, I'm sure they enjoyed working with the Faz on it. It took me having to count the holes twice to remember which number it was.  So much for the memorability of the place.

Still, the hole is a lot of fun and Jim, yes, it is very remeniscent of Pine Valley in the aspect of the look. (Forgetting that there is a ocean to the left)

After this hole, I recommend a good nap as the rest of the course gets pretty boring.
