Ran, I've noticed the apron short of the green on many courses seems to get double the amount of water other parts of the course do.
At my home club the last sprinkler head in the fairway is about 40 yards short of the green and waters all the way up to the putting surface.
Because of water pressure the automatic timer turns the green sprinklers on separately to the fairway ones and because of that this area just short of the green always seems to get a double dose.
Alister MacKenzie always stressed the importance of the approaches to greens bearing the same consistency as the greens themselves, so the running shot would always an option. MacKenzie refered to the aerial shot as "the vulgar pitch" which I always find amusing.
