Alex:

Good call / re: Wolf Creek's 3rd hole. Interesting juxtaposition between what the 3rd does (going uphill) when held against the terror that the 8th (downhill) provides.

The 3rd hole at my former home course--Hop Meadow CC in Simsbury, CT--is a pretty steeply uphill (25 feet, maybe) par 3 of about 145 yards, but the par 4 10th overshadows it, ascending about 60 feet.

There's a scrubby, arcane 9-holer in North Salem, NY called Peqhonaconck (sic).  The 4th hole there is called "Kilimanjaro" - about 130 yards staright up a rugged, volcanic slope.  I'm not positive, but I would guess it's a 35-40 foot change in elevation.  It truly is a "2 or 10" hole like the one profiled at Engineers on the GCA site, but without the possibility of the "2."  It's so unique that the first time you play it, you can't even locate the green unless someone taps you on the shoulder and says "No, no, it's up there."
"The tee shot must first be hit straight and long between a vast bunker on the left which whispers 'slice' in the player's ear, and a wilderness on the right which induces a hurried hook." -

I thought that the 16th at Worplesdon was a really nice hole - although I hve only played it once in 2004 and can't remember it too well! I also like the 7th at Parkstone.

The 16th at St. Patrick's course in Carrigart, Donegal is very steep. Although I only walked the course (I was tempted to walk way down to the tee, but it just looked like too much trouble).

Here's the tee location: http://www.stpatricksgolflinks.com/magher/16pic2.htm
and the green (the tee is down in a hollow to the left): http://www.stpatricksgolflinks.com/magher/16pic1.htm

I wrote about a hole that no longer exists, No. 15 at The Valley Club in Phoenix, Arizona. Favourite Holes by Design by Paul Daley. I think this is a very under-rated golf experience...the severe uphill hole, especially a one-shotter. While I would not intentionally look for one, I do think they can be quite interesting as I related from my school days playing at The Valley Club. If anyone with more computer skills that me (quite easily achieved) can scan the diagram in Paul's book I am sure it will be forgiven that it gets reproduced here.

Anyone ever play Westwood Golf club (Formerly Duquesne CC) in West Mifflin, PA?  The 4th hole there is about 180 yards and completely blind.  No green, no flag.  Only a big pole to help you point towards the middle of the green.  It's the steepest uphill par 3 i've played in Western PA, so it's pretty steep.

There is one at a course I used to play called Gerrards Cross, in south Buckinghamshire. The course is on two levels, so this is really a way to get from the lower section to the upper section. there is a downhill par 4 later to get back down.

The par 3 is about 180 on the card and the green is probably at least 40 feet above the tee, so the flag appears on the horizon of the green.

There is a bench at the top which commemorates a member who dropped died after climbing the hill. Surprised there isn't a full cemetery.

Always hated that hole.

The best one I've played recently is the 11th at Royal Belfast.  A real cracker with a sideways tiered green and some awful junk short and right.

Some favorites include:

2 at Seven Oaks.  This is a neat short par three (unusual for Robert Trent Jones), so it is usually nothing more than a mid-iron for me.  YOu can't see the putting surface, but you have to know where the green is because missing the green is deadly.  The hole probably contains the most severe green in Western New York, and you can make a 2 or a 7 with ease.

2 at Irondequoit Country Club.  This hole is longer than the above hole at 170 yards.  It has no bunkers, but the green is elevated steeply above the player.  Interestingly, the hole is relatively flat until about 30 yards short of the green.  It has a huge, rippling green that allows players to hold longer irons on the green and makes putting difficult.  Mark Chalfant included this hole on his "Ultimate 18" a couple weeks ago, so he can speak to the hole's greatness.

17 at Long Shadow! Many people have discussed and praised this hole.  The massive punchbowl green makes this long par three eminently fair.  Just don't go long!

9 at Leatherstocking.  This hole is a tremendous reverse Redan-style par three.  The hole appears wedged into the routing, but it is one of the absolute best on the course.  It is part of a killer set of par threes.  The green is benched into a hillside, meaning that there is tons of hill left to knock golf shots onto the green.  Of course, this also means that right of the green is DEAD.  It's a hole where you have to trust your swing and hope for the best.

From the diverse lengths of the three holes mentioned above (140-200 yards), I conclude that a steep hole par three can be great regardless of the length of the hole.  The key component to designing an uphill par three is designing a green that will hold golf shots hit from the length of the hole.  The architects on each of these four holes (RTJ, Ross, Mike Young, and Devereux Emmet) do this very successfully.

I used to play cricket at Chalfont St Peter, who's ground is in the elbow of the dogleg of the 2nd at Gerrards Cross.  Conrad Gamble of the last three BUDAs is a member there.  That par 3 is seriously uphill.  I don't mind it, since it's a hole I always seem to play quite well.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

The 7th hole on the Mountain Nine at Governors Club in Chapel Hill, NC is a beautiful 145-yard steeply uphill par-3 with a wide stream running all along the right side from tee to green and a green angled from front left to back right. You can see the stick and reasonably guess when the cup is, but the putting surface is totally blind. The view from the green back to the tee is pretty neat, as it really gives a sense of being in the mountains while in reality the area is just gently rolling.

One of the hardest uphill par 3's that is quite steep-especially if your ball funnels down to the fairway from the false front is the 13th at Sand Hills. Watched a couple of 2 hndcps not get there with drivers into the wind and then struggle from the valley in front. Probably as hard a par 3 that I've seen. Another tough uphill par 3 although it is not steep is the 8th at Lancaster. Played it into the wind in August and it was a full 2 iron from 195yds-tough hole!              Jack
