GolfWeek rates the course at 33 Best Modern. Doak gives the course a 5 and a so-so comment. What gives? Is a the course worth a visit when traveling to play Bandon Dunes?

Different strokes for different folks.  Obviously, Tom Doak is not a Golfweek rater.

Yes, it is a good course and if you flew into Eugene or were driving down from Portland it would be a good place to play.  Also while you are there go by Fiddler's Green Golf Shop which is just north of Eugene airport on Highway 99.  One of the largest golf shops anywhere, no sales tax and you can test the clubs on their driving range all day.

There was a discussion about it a few weeks back around here.

ECC is over-rated in my mind.  The course gets off to a nice start through the trees, but after a while the 390 - 410 yard par 4's get repetitive.

Something like 80% of the par 4's fall into that yardage range- and its a flat course too.

Gentlemen

Are we talking about the same course, Eugene Country Club is the home course for Casey Martin and Jeff Quinney it is a very nice private tract. I would not say it is flat and the greens are extremely quick. If you can get on it is a must play.

395,215,390,408,185,545,200,485,450 Front nine 35
401,400,183,525,390,410,492,347,433 Back nine 37 6854

Now as was pointed out there are some holes that are the same length or close too that but trust me each and every hole plays differently. I should know as I got to play the PNGA Mens Amateur there.

For instance Hole 1 was (2 iron ptching wedge) Hole 3 was (3 wood pitching wedge)

Hole 10 was (3 wood nine iron) while Hole 11 was (driver 8 iron.) Big valley at the landing area on 11 takes the roll out of the tee shot.

You have to think all the way around this gem, the course is very tight, the game is in placing yourself well off the tee for the second shot. Like I said the greens are very fast.

Yes I would play it

Soory guys I wanted to also mention that the Par 3's are fantastic. You play them to even par and you have accompished something few golfers do on that course.

All different and five is decidedly downhill possibly.

They make you sweat

Is there a possiblity that the HC Egan course that was destroyed here, a much better course, and that the club allowed it to happen just because RTJ was a name at that time?

Egan-Head,

That is a good question.  I've spoken with people who have played both versions of ECC and some thought the original was better while others like the newer course.   I think that holes 2, 4, 15, 16 and 17 are my favorites out there.  It is head and shoulders above anything else in the southern Willamette Valley, but I think it might be overrated at this point.  Of all the modern courses I've seen, it definitely has the most classical inland feel to it which I think gives it a higher rating that it might be deserving.  A few less trees might help also.

I personally loved the course. I would love to play there again. I like to play acourse 3 or 4 times before giving to much praise or critisism but this is a fun well balanced course.
