I COMPLETELY agree with Mr. Huck's choices from Cinnabar Hills and San Juan Oaks. I also really like the closer of Cinnabar's Canyon nine (Par 5)... Haven't played the Lake nine yet.

I would also include Summitpointe's #16 (Par 3), Eagle Ridge's 13th (Par 3) and 14th (Par 5), and The Ranch's #12 (Par 4, a good hole in an isolated section of a, shall I say, 'tumultuous'(?) layout).

The Diablo selections are out of bounds, I believe. Put them in an East Bay list (which would be stronger than the South Bay's, by my reckoning, although I must admit that I haven't played nearly as many courses in the South).

Guys, simple rules for this one, as the reporter stated.

If you want to include the North Bay, start your thread and write an article in a North Bay newspaper.

And Diablo CC doesn't count, it's east of Lake Chabot.

And perhaps, you might not be able to find 18 good holes ;)

Yeoouch!!!  Mike ain't messing around   :o   ;D

well I'll have you know Mare Island, Blue Rock East, and Delta View can stand up against anything the south bay courses got!!!   :D

I like #2 at Tilden Park...the sharp right-left bend where the second shot is anything from 150-210 yds depending on how much of the dogleg you challenged off the tee.  Crafty folks can bend a long or mid iron off the tee if the fairways are rolling.

For the second shot the green is blind and anything short can come rolling back down the hill (assuming the course isn't wet).  Green is larger than it looks, and isn't bunkered in the front.  Depending on where your tee shot ends up, the second shot can be uphill.

Great setting as well...walking through the fairway up to the green.

Kalen - that would be fun - make the dividing line San Luis Obispo or so - but that's for another thread, as Mike says.  And Mike is right, silly me, Diablo is way east of Lake Chabot, at least for these purposes.  I didn't look at a map to confirm that.   ;)  And you're right re those courses standing up proudly against the south bay... a golf hot bed we are not.

Kyle - cool additions, though I wouldn't have any of those knock out any from my list.  I had to limit it somehow.  I started by trying to make a course, as the writer says he will... But then just added a few extra in each category.

I like:

#2 at Pasatiempo
#9 at San Francisco
#13 at Stanford

JK:

GREAT additions.

I too really, really like #2 at Pasa.  My list was just so Pasa-heavy as it was, I felt like deleting one and that was it.

#9 SFGC does belong.  That is a great hole.  I had it, deleted it, likely should put it back.

#13 Stanford... hmmm... that too is a great golf hole with the fairway bunker perfectly placed.  I'm just partial to #12.  But that too would be a good addition.

I guess this is tougher than I originally thought.

My list is slowly coming, but no one has mentioned Pasatiempo # 16.
Sweeping right to left tee ball, to a never flat lie second shot, into a three tiered green.

Pasa # 10 is also on my list.  The green slopes left much more than it looks.

Huck,
Cinnabar Hills Canyon # 8 a Redan?  I do not agree.

Steve - great pics - but for shame, I mentioned 10 and 16 Pasa.

And re #8 Cinnabar (Canyon), I said closest thing to a redan.  Of course it's not the genuine article.  But it at least has some of the characteristics... besides that, it's just plain a great golf hole.  Or at least I think so.   ;)

Yes, I saw your # 10, but must have missed your #16 comments.   My bad.

I like #8 Canyon as well, it is often down wind, and plays longer than it looks.  I nailed one through the green last time and I was above the hole.  Thus, my anti Redan remarks.   :)

It is stretching the defintion, I know.

Hopefully the pic helps - it's from the cinnabar website.

I do really like that hole...

So I sent an email off to Eric at mercury news asking why the top half of the bay area was excluded. He responded with the following.

"Thanks for reading and taking the time to write.

I would like to point out that you are free to include holes outside of the area as I have described if you feel strongly. It's just the bulk of our readership is in the area we defined.

Thanks,

Eric Pinkela"

Looks like I'm going to have to edit my list and a few others may have some work to do too!!!   ;D

I'm with Bill McBride regarding Meadow Club #7.  Great dogleg left into a secluded gully.

Bill also liked #9.  Not as good to play as #7 IMO, but does photograph quite well.

Barry Bonds.

I think he is the perfect example of an Bay Area A-hole as I have ever seen! (Given his behavior of the last few days. But what else would one expect from a speed freak?)

Oh, wait a second! This was GOLF HOLES......

In that case, I'll give five of my favorite:

Oly-Lakeside #18
SFGC #4
SFGC #3
SFGC #7
SFGC #12

Thanks, James.  I do love those holes at the Meadow Club.  It is such a secluded beauty up there all by itself.  When I played with Sean Tully, Jonathan "Longknock" McCord and Ed Getka in late November, we saw deer, turkeys, maybe a couple of bighorn sheep, and almost three eagles by Jonathan just on the back nine!

sorry, no pictures of Eagles or Sheep.  This was early April, after 'the rain'.  Meadow Club wildlife.

So far, no selections from Harding Park (my old "home course")...how about #18?  I also like #14 for beauty and toughness.  I played a lot of early evening rounds at Harding, and when the setting sun shines through the Cypress trees on that last stretch of holes, it is something special.

Presidio:  I second Tom H's nomination of #12 - an attractive hole and a very tough hole, especially given how wet that course can get.

SFGC:  My favorites are 3,4 and 7...

Kalen:

Sorry man, no editing for me; hell my list is already turned
in anyway and to me it just makes sense to stick with the defined
area, especially since broadening this so would mean a lot
more work.  ;) But Eric's answer just echoes what I said earlier, no?

Those are nice pics from Meadow Club though James!

David - if I were to pick a hole from Harding, it would be
#18.  Great call there - it should be added.  I'm sticking
with the ommissions of the holes other than 7 from SFGC though.
I like 3 and 4 well enough; I just don't think they'd replace any
I listed.  If I was to add one, I think it would be 12.

And great call re Bonds, Tommy.  Oh man he's really stepped
in it this time... ESPN just reported Giants are demanding he
submit to nearly constant testing this year or no contract... if
they had any balls they'd just cut him.

Kevin -

#16 is one of my favorites as well.  A great, short, risk / reward par four.  After the tournament in '05, I will forever associate that hole with John Daly...

Not sure I can put it ahead of #18, though...

I just threw in the "bighorn sheep" to see if anybody was paying attention!

BTW, Jonathan flew his tee shot onto #16 in the photo with the deer, 315 yards on the fly!  Oh my!  :o

Is there a really pretty and good solid hole on the back 9 of Stonetree, maybe the 15th or so?

Thoughts of difficulty equaling greatness will undoubtedly be at play.

If someone wants to win this thing, findout where the editor plays his golf.

I'd include the 8th at Summitpoint. The first at Tilden Pk. The 11th at Ridgemark (Diablo?). Something from the Cal Club. The 11th at Pajaro Valley. The 17th at Lincoln Park. Something from Boulder creek perhaps?

If difficulty is important, then #10 at DeLaveaga has to be considered.  That is a hard hole.  590 yards, par 5.

Difficulty should be examined carefully.  I believe Mr. Clayman is stating that difficulty is often confused with greatness.

If any hole from De La Veaga makes our list, then we have no knowledge of good GCA.  There will no doubt be a hole from this course on the SJ Mercury News list.

I'm certainly not suggesting #10 at DeLaveaga deserves to be considered.  However, it is very difficult.  OB right, ball gone left, single file walk around the corner of the dogleg 350 yards out.
