13 at Merion East
6 at Merion West
5 at French Creek
11 at Applebrook
2 or 20 at Engineers
7 at Nine Flags (the course I grew up on)

Hey Cirba!  I am beginnning to think you don't read previous posts!

Ciao

Sean,

I didn't see anyone mention Nine Flags!  ;)

I'll add 17 at Merion West, as well, since you dragged me back here.  ;D

Is #7 at Nine Flags the equal of #17 at Paxon Hollow?

I've probably hit the green the same amount of times on each of them, which is about a .05% batting percentage.

17 at Paxon is a corker, which Wayne and I discussed recently while playing #6 Merion West.

You cheeky mug!  Two holes at Merion West under 130 yards?  That must be quite unusual, especially with both on the back nine.  Are there any other really good courses with two sub 130 yard par 3s?  Goodale, I have excluded Painswick.

Ciao

Sean,

Actually, although I don't have the card in front of me, the 6th at Merion West is about 115 yards, and about 70 feet downhill over a creek that winds around the left side.   Truly a brilliant hole nobody would ever design today.   The 17th is about 130 on the nose, to a perched, well bunkered green.

Interestingly, the other two par threes are pretty lengthy...the 6th is about 210, but fairly downhill, and the 15th is around 230.

The entire course is 5900 or so yards, playing to a par of 70, but due to yardage dispersion, topography, and some wonderful design features, it plays much longer and is quite a good course in its own right.

Oh yeah!  :o :o :o

125 yards straight up hill over the ramparts, totally blind, to a green about the size of a Volkswagon minibus.

Having played almost none of these holes, I innocently wonder:

How long is #15 at Painswick?  That is a delightful hole.

By the way, at least the two volkswagon minibuses have had their roof removed, making it feasable to keep a shot inside the bus.  However, the two greens (#5 and #10) are as undulating as the inside a volkswagon minibus with the seats nearly laid back.  Thank heavens the greens have some grass on them at Painswick.  And the fairways too for that matter.

# 3 at Wannamoisett which offersyou the ability any score from 1 through 7. Eminently fair, penally bunkered, difficult green and aboslutely intolerant of a misguided tee shot. Hit it left, welcome to Hoyt Avenue, hit it right and explore the rainforest of Rumford. Hit it long and send in your resignation.

Great hole, easy on the eye and yet a serpentine element so well hidden.

James, I think #15 (Dell) is about 145 yards, it was a nice little downhill 8 iron.

#7 at 150 yards has a tiny green, sort of like trying to stop a 7 iron on a picnic blanket, with OB left and a bank to the right.

#18 is about the same distance with a much larger green; the only difficulties there are the steep bank to the right and the jeering crowd on the terrace above.

By contrast #6, Beacon, is about 215 to a very well-protected green, and was one of the great Henry Longhurst's favorite holes in Britain.

By the way, just thinking about the seats of a Volkswagon minibus laid back makes me tingle all over with distant memories!  ;D

I know all about OOB left on #7, and how steep the slope is there.  My 'natural' shot is right to left. :(

#6 (Beacon) a well-protected green?  Small (undersized?), undulating, and reverse sloped can also describe it.

And, I think a number of the local lads and lassies would have some distant memories of the ramparts, and the 'romantic' views from atop of Painswick.  Next to these two sub-130 yard par threes of course (#5 and #10).

Does 11 at Cuscowilla qualify?  I believe the back tee is somewhere in the naighborhood of 138, but it'd still be an interesting little shot from 130.

I'll be a homer and nominate 13 at Pawleys Plantation, a neat all-or-nothing shot.

Finally, someone who agrees with me about 9 at Caledonia!

Personally, it seems fairly hard to go wrong with a short par 3.  I don't know of any that I really dislike.

Finally, someone who agrees with me about 9 at Caledonia!

I liked the green and surrounds very much at #9 Caledonia, it's a lovely little hole, but it should have played in the other direction!

I mentioned that after the recent Dixie Cup when we played there a couple of weeks ago.

You walk off the back of the 8th green, hike a hundred yards or so to the tee, play the hole, and then once again hike that hundred yards to the 10th tee.

I have no idea why it doesn't play in the opposite direction.  I suppose, in hind sight, that it could have something to do with the prevalent use of carts there.  :-\

Some great ones have been mentioned so far and I'm kicking myself for not including #9 at Myopia and #11 at Hidden Creek on my original post.

Here's another lesser known one... #13 at Norwich GC in Norwich, CT.  Straight up hill, 110 yds from the tips.  The picture below is not from the tee, it is from a much different angle.

You can hit Foxwoods and then play this Ross course.

#9 at Myopia is actually 135 yards so doesn't meet the criteria.  There are a LOT of great short holes that are in the 130-140 yard range.

11 at Hidden Creek is tremendous, and reminiscent of 11 at Shinnecock in its demands and the way a 5 can appear very quickly on the card on a hole without water.

btw, how long is 11 at Shinnecock again?  150?

The 11th at Shinney was about 165 from the tips last I played it (and I holed out of the front left pot for 2!) :)

While I LOVE the 11th at Hidden Creek I personally don't see the comparison.  I also don't think the 11th at HC is nearly as penal as it lacks the over and gone aspect that Shinney has, you can pitch or putt up that back slope and have it come back to your feet 10 times in a row.  You can also cross the hole numerous times if you're not carefule.

The 11th at Shinney is one hole that I would like to see play more at 135 or so with a back left pin you could consider challenging it and getting yourself into even more trouble.

Best in Texas is 16 at Ridgewood in Waco.Plays down edge of Lake Waco.Anything left of pin is dead.Best Ralph Plummer course and I bet nobody knows it.When the President plays the guards make it feel like the Frankfurt airport.Otherwise laid back and with a little imagination the lake views remind one of Gullane.I believe Justin Leanard won Southwest Conf championship here.

HOMER.

Jimmy beat me to #11 at Hidden Creek.  Three nominations for the little bastard.

And for my homer call, Ballyneal #3 is 145 but at 3700 feet elevation.  One of these days I'll learn to post pics.

Evan,

I like the 107 yard 3rd at Ventana Canyon (Mountain). Strategic value: A largish green but death if you miss it.

I'm also partial to the short 5th at Fossil Trace. Matt Ward will come on here and tell me I'm a homer. He could be wrong... ::)

Here's another thread on short par 3s from earlier this year:
