Take notice of Tommy's message.  NOW do you believe me about SoCal traffic?

I was in the Los Angeles basin a month or so ago. I wondered how much of one's life expectancy was decreased by the stress of traffic jams?

I remember in the early seventies one could get from Riviera to LACC in about ten minutes, tops. Now it seems a good half an hour.

I live less than 5 min (by car) to Hamilton Farm, but would have strongly considered a few other relatively nearby clubs....but alas, they would not have me in any time less than 6 years(Baltusrol) at best. Now had I been able to join Somerset Hills or Plainfield?

As you might have heard there is nothing really worth joining in SD for the money they're asking; although I'de be happy to sequestor myself behind the gates of the Covanent if the membership at Rancho Santa Fe extended an invitation. In the mean time I feel quite fortunate to only have a 30 minute drive to Barona Creek. If we haven't played Rustic Canyon for over 2 months the urge becomes so strong that even the 3 hour drive won't deter us; although I left for home at 2:00 pm last week and it took 4.5 hours.

I'm about 3-4 miles and 8 minutes from my home club...only 1 mile and 3 minutes from where I work in downtown Dubuque.  Then again, everything in Dubuque is from 1-10 minutes away...ahhhhhh...small town living!  ;D

I live 7 miles from my home club.  Without traffic, it takes about 17 minutes, with traffic about 22 minutes.

5 minutes from the house, 30 minutes from work.  Club is on the way home, so 9 after work is a cinch.

Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

I lived a half mile from my club's in-town course, which took about 2 minutes; and 4 miles from the club's 2 courses in the country (now more like the suburbs), which took about 15 minutes.

Company relocated me, and now I'm about an hour and 10 minutes away from each....and it hurts.

Darren - I need to be slapped into better consciousness today, thus I ask:

a) how much do you pay for a membership at Machrihanish? and

b) do they have provisions for overseas members?

TH

Tom, it costs me roughly £190 a year in dues to be a member at Machrihanish - there's a £50 "initiation fee" during your first year as a member. There's no overseas rate as such...hopefully I don't need to explain why. :)

Cheers,
Darren

With moderate traffic, I live about 20 minutes from my club. Even leaving the office during rush hour, I can be there in 30-35 minutes. Not all bad.

WCC courses.. all less than 15 minutes from my driveway to entrance drive.

I know several folks that drive from downtown ~45 minutes on weekends.

Traffic: 20-25 minutes
After a Thursday afternoon game: 45 minutes.

15 miles on the Colonial Parkway. No traffic lights. 6 other facilities closer (one resort with three courses, two municipal courses, two private courses, and one military base course). None as good as my home course.

75 miles on weekdays from NYC, and 30 miles on many weekends from Stamford to Yale. Randalls Island Golf Center is 3-4 miles from my apartment and is where I sneak out to hit balls with my son, but alas, rush hour bridge traffic is not the optimal time to go.

Guys, please chip in on this one.  It's an issue for a good number of people and getting some basis for what's reasonable and unreasonable would be quite helpful to many who are considering such things.

Mr. Shivas -

What is this supposed to mean? That this bunch is reasonable when it comes to golf? That "honey, everyone's driving a hundred miles each way"?

I live in a cave under the first tee.

Actually, I do not subscribe to the "home course" thing.

Closer to 8 minutes away depending on traffic lights, but what does it matter.  If you build the right course and your patrons have enough money "they will come."  This has nothing to do with architecture and everything to do with affluence.

If Shinney would let me, then my club would be 3,000 miles away.  Get my drift.
