Darn - I knew I should have done more than my quick and very shoddy research.  I also should have gone back and read your post.

In any case, even in light of this, would you call it a "landslide"?  It works if you take the very tight definition as you seem to in your post... but expand this out a little, and well....

Lots of "great" courses on either side of the sea.   ;D

You are incorrectomundo, AwShuckster!

If you are going to include the courses of Northern Ireland, you have to include their population, which is 1.6 million (see my post above), so they have more people in total than Scotland (5.6 vs. 5.0)

Jack's list is fine and he doesn't even include one of my faves, Portsalon, but it really doesn't compare to:

Muirfield
The Old Course
Dornoch
Carnoustie
Troon
Turnberry
Prestwick
Kingsbarns
Western Gailes
North Berwick
Cruden Bay
Aberdeen
Loch Lomond
Gullane
Nairn
Brora
Machrihanish
New Course
etc.
etc.
etc.

Rich,

I wasn't really making the case for Ireland, as I don't have much experience beyond these shores.

I've listed what I thought were the great courses that most people would agree with (not all of course), but I could also have added Rossapenna, Portsalon, Carne, Baltray, and a few others. I would be delighted if Ireland came second to scotland in the rankings, however. There'd be no shame in that.

Anyway, I've listed some courses, it will take me a little longer to compile a list of all the Irish people...

I know, Jack, I was just taking a potshot at Tom.

PS--What can you tell us about Headfort New--I for one, haven't heard of it before?

PPS--My guess is that the Irish and the Scots have roughly the same number of people per capita.

Rich,

I played Headfort last Summer. Visually very attractive but don't relax, its a tough course. Looking forward to playing there again this Summer. I believe it is a Christy O' Connor Jnr., design. Just outside the city of Kells in County Meath, about 45 mins north west of Dublin.

I believe it has the highest standard scratch in the country, which makes it very hard. It's my favorate parkland course in the country by a long way, although it might not be appealing to everyone as it has a lot of trees and a lot of water... and a whole lot of other stuff that takes you ball and doesn't give it back to you.
