The best three hole stretches (diverse par division) in the world are at ANGC.

Take your pick:

2,3,4

or

11, 12, 13

or

14, 15, 16

or

15, 16, 17

I was going to include 6, 7, 8, but 7 is my least favorite hole.

10, 11 and 12 at Pacific Grove (or currently 1, 2 and 3 ...), and to boot, they are all on the short side ...

Mike - interesting choice, but anyone who can call #10 (currently #1) a "great" golf hole has had a bit too much of the Clayman kool-aid.

 ;)

The other two work quite well though.

From my limited experience, my picks would go as such:

The Country Club: 10-12, with 10 being a quirky short four with a big mound in front of the green, 11 being one of the world's great par fives, a total bear for its length, and 12 being a fun short three.  I went 5-7-2 on these three holes!

St. Geogre's: 4-6, 11-13, 13-15.

Oak Hollow: 4-6, where four is a three across a cove, five plays back across and then out to a peninsula green as a par five, and six is a killer-but-driveable par four around the lake.

Teugega: 5-7
CC of Buffalo: 11-13 (Quarry Holes)
Mill Creek: 5-7
Monroe: 7-9
Oak Hill (east): 11-13

A great diverse stretch is 10, 11 and 12 at Athens Country Club.

I can't believe it took so long to mention 6-8 at PBGL.
Among the courses I've played, that stretch is my favorite -- though 4-6 at Cape Breton Highlands and 16-18 at Pacific Dunes are close.

Other sets I like:
7-9 at Stanford (I find that stretch much more interesting than the 16-18 stretch mentioned earlier)
1-3 at Spyglass (even though I don't really like 3)
14-16 at The Ocean Course
3-5 at Bethpage Black
9-11 at Pinehurst No. 2
13-15 or 14-16 at Dubsdread

I originally listed several other three hole combinations including yours at Dornoch and both stretches at Deal.  I didn't list the CB series because of the 5th.  Is this really a great hole or is it sandwiched in a great run of two on one side and two on the other?

Sean,

I think the 5th at Cruden Bay is the best of the three (the meat in the sandwich? :P ). A superb two shotter with both shots compelling IMO.

Ironically enough, coming off of a comment by Tom Doak, one of my favorite stretches is his 14-16 at Beechtree.

Coming in the middle of the second nine, 14 ad 15 are, pound for pound, two of the best back to back holes I have ever played.  On the scorecard, the par reads "4", however 14 is certainly a tough par, and 15 is a very tough par.

Additionally, I find the optimal play on 14 to be a draw that hits the hill about 270 out from the blue tees and gains a turbo boost, leaving about a pitching wedge in.  It's worked for me in the past, given the green's nature.

Fifteen is a monster.  Big cut required here, which should be easy for me  ;), and that still leaves a mid to long iron in here.  It's just so exacting, and I love it.

Sixteen offers a bit of a respite from the pounding just received on the prior two holes (in my case, usually a 5 or 6 on 15  :P )  It's a short hole, not a version of "The" "Short" hole, but I like it as well.  Reasonably big target, and some features to the green that require a precise short iron-or a deft putter  ;)

While on the subject of Beechtree, I also find 10-11-12 to be good as well, as they are, in my opinion, solid holes that allow a small breather in between the demands of 8 and 9 and the stretch to come starting on 14.  11 is probably the "easiest" of the three to score well on, given the hole's shorter nature, but it is by no means an easy birdie or par.  12 is more difficult, but pars and birdies can be had.

I'd be interested in hearing others' thoughts on these stretches, and especially, if Tom himself wants to comment.

For the best stretch at the Ocean Course, play 13 and 14, skip 15, and play 16.  Along with 3, these are the best holes on the course! ;D ;D

here are a few to ponder - many obvious

3,4,5 at Fishers Island - no par 5's -but a great stretch nonetheless
11-15 at the National In Toronto
4-7 at Scarboro in Toronto
some one mentioned 11-13 at Atlantic City -4-8 is a pretty great stretch as well

Merion 3-4-5 as a trio of different pars  and 16-18 might be my favorite finish in golf

14-16 at Olympia Fields North

Spyglass 1st three holes  are great

the 3  finishers at Sawgrass and Pebble or 6,7,8 at Pebble

3,4,5 at Chicago Golf Club

5,6,7 or 13,14,15 at PV

13,14,15 at Shoreacres

6,7,8 at Cypress

more to follow

I agree with Jay:
4-5-6 at Highland Links
short four, mid-length three, and long five

7-8-9 at SFGC
drop shot three, uphill four, level five

8-9-10 Pinehurst #2
rising plateau four, drop shot three, twisting long tough five

4-5-6 Baltray
short lumpy four, diabolical short three, beautiful valley five with clever green site

Ian,

I have to disqualify your Pinehurst # 2 call.

# 8 is a par 5.

But, # 4, 5 and 6 aren't a bad call
and neither are # 16, 17 and 18

GCGC  # 2, 3 and 4.
         # 11, 12* and 13,
         # 12, 13 and 14
          # 16, 17 and 18

Sean,

I think the 5th at Cruden Bay is the best of the three (the meat in the sandwich? :P ). A superb two shotter with both shots compelling IMO.

Doug

Zowie!  Just goes to show that much of what makes golf great is how the player visualizes and interacts with the course.

I don't think the 5th is great by any means.  A bit of a slog with wind.  All three times I played it it was driver 3 wood.  Once it wasn't reachable.  I don't have a problem with a hole or two like this on a course, but they aren't my favorites.  What is a bit unique about #5 is the drive.  For a "slog" hole this drive is very fun.

I much prefer #6.  A really great par 5, which makes it all the more unusual.  Either way, the stretch of 3-7 is as compelling and diverse as any golfer could wish for.

Ciao

#6 is the par 5.  #7 is the short dog leg left to the skyline green.  So, if you must have "diverse" pars, 4-6 at CB is the only way you can go.  If you forget about par, 3-5, 4-6 and 5-7 at CB are all all-world 3-hole stretches.
