Ironically enough, coming off of a comment by Tom Doak, one of my favorite stretches is his 14-16 at Beechtree.
Coming in the middle of the second nine, 14 ad 15 are, pound for pound, two of the best back to back holes I have ever played. On the scorecard, the par reads "4", however 14 is certainly a tough par, and 15 is a very tough par.
Additionally, I find the optimal play on 14 to be a draw that hits the hill about 270 out from the blue tees and gains a turbo boost, leaving about a pitching wedge in. It's worked for me in the past, given the green's nature.
Fifteen is a monster. Big cut required here, which should be easy for me
, and that still leaves a mid to long iron in here. It's just so exacting, and I love it.
Sixteen offers a bit of a respite from the pounding just received on the prior two holes (in my case, usually a 5 or 6 on 15
) It's a short hole, not a version of "The" "Short" hole, but I like it as well. Reasonably big target, and some features to the green that require a precise short iron-or a deft putter
While on the subject of Beechtree, I also find 10-11-12 to be good as well, as they are, in my opinion, solid holes that allow a small breather in between the demands of 8 and 9 and the stretch to come starting on 14. 11 is probably the "easiest" of the three to score well on, given the hole's shorter nature, but it is by no means an easy birdie or par. 12 is more difficult, but pars and birdies can be had.
I'd be interested in hearing others' thoughts on these stretches, and especially, if Tom himself wants to comment.
