Tom,

I presume you are at least familiar with the land at Inverness, but maybe not as it seems you were unaware that it was capped with sand.  Be that as it may, do you actually expect to be considered on every "interesting" site?  STOP... Please!  I have never seen the land/site and I have never met Rod Whitman, but neither of these matter to me with respect to Mr. Whitmans ability to do a good/great job, yet I thought I detected a hint of hesitation as you refer to Rod's ability to do a great job.  It is possible I was reading between the lines, but it seems others may have sensed a similar tone.

Now you might think I am sending one across the bow of the great ship Renaissance, but this isn't so, I am just a bit surprised by your comment in this particular thread.  Perhaps you know something the rest of us don't?   Would Rod's fee actually be lower than yours? Who knows, and is this somehow important to this project, or site, or Rod's skills? I can't see how.  I guess if great design equated to how much one charges then Nicklaus Fazio, Norman and many others should have been doing much better work long ago!

I agree with Robert Thompson in saying I too would think Rod Whitman is quite aware how important this project is or could be for him, for that matter, I would go so far as to say that probably every project he does is important to him, regardless of the fee.

I wonder, does Pete Dye do a better job when he charges a big fee rather than his occasional nominal fee of $1?

To say I'm excited about this is an understatement.  I fell in love with Cape Breton a few years ago, and this will just add to the feeling.

The people of the island have a wonderful culture - from Acadian to Scottish and Irish.  And they mix wonderfully.  The music of the island is legendary (http://www.ckjm.ca/english/radio/viewschedule.cfm) too.

Combined with Highlands Links, CBI already has Bell Bay, a pretty good course with great conditioning (Can. Amateur was held at BB this year), and my sleeper up in Cheticamp, Le Portage.

I consider myself privileged to have played both Highland Links and the Bandon courses - Cabot Trail will likely be another course I'll be proud to experience.

Congratulations, Jeff - you've got eager fans down here in Philly.

I'm happy that Rod and Jeff will get the chance to give "New Scotland" a proper seaside golf course. Great news indeed!

Greg - how is it that you knew this? I like to be on the cutting edge with this stuff and was totally out of the loop...

I have driven from the airport to the site a number of times, fastest time was 2:39, slowest (during construction) was 3:10 minutes. The qualifier is that it is closer to the airport, than the city, which is great for tourists who are flying in. It is much closer to Halifax airport than Highlands Links and the drive is entirely on highways, so it is a pretty easy trip.

The map can be found at: http://www.cabotlinks.com/site/

Thank you all for the well wishes, both online and off.

I have no personal knowledge of the site at all, having never heard anything about the project until Greg's post.  I meant to say it was a bummer that we weren't considered for the job, because I've always loved Cape Breton Highlands, and I'd love to have a reason to go back there.  I didn't think I was showing too much ego by wishing we had been contacted, considering that I know Ben Dewar a little bit from this site, and he has seen most of our best work.  But he probably just thinks Rod is a better designer.

I congratulated Rod on getting the job.  I just thought it was a little bit premature of Dan to compare it to Pacific Dunes, when Greg had reported that it was a reclaimed strip mine.  It was nothing personal -- I have a lot of respect for Rod, and I hope he makes the most of this opportunity to do something special.

And Jeff M, if you're getting the same fees as we are nowadays, more power to you!

Those of you in the know will understand the tie in, especially in the last sentence:

"Doug and Dinsdale Piranha now formed a gang, which the called 'The Gang' and
used terror to take over night clubs, billiard halls, gaming casinos and race
tracks.  When they tried to take over the MCC they were for the only time in
their lives, slit up a treat.  As their empire spread however, Q Division were
keeping tabs on their every move by reading the colour supplements."

Sorry to go so deep ;D, and congrats to Rod and Jeff!(heretofore aka Doug and Dinsdale? :D)

Which reminds me of my favorite snippet from that sketch:

"Latterly Dinsdale had become increasingly worried about Spiny Norman.  He had come to the conclusion that Norman slept in an aeroplane hangar at Luton Airport.  And so on Feb 22nd 1966, Dinsdale blew up Luton.

Even the police began to sit up and take notice."

Ben can correct me but I think the fees Rod is commanding are not in the same ballpark as other established architects.  Mike Nuzzo and I (and a couple others) had lunch (liquid-type  ;)) with Rod last year at Blackhawk.  Rod was adding a few new holes and agreed to lunch with us after our golf.  He was doing the work and living in a tent(!) at a campground down the road.

Rod is so understated he can probably be well compared with Dye before Dye was known.  Rod is an artist with a bull-dozer and is most happy in the seat of his Cat.  Negotiating great business deals doesn't seem his forte.

Jonathon,

Rod elects to stay in tents at campgrounds, and in the wilderness. Trust me!

He also enjoys first-class air, and five-star hotels when the time's right  ;)

As I understand it, the property for this golf course may be the best property for golf in all of Canada, and perhaps rival any in the world.
There is no doubt in my mind that Ben has chosen the right team for this project. I expect that the finished project will be incredible and make Inverness a must visit destination for all of us.
I only hope Shooter gets to consult.

Very overstated.

There are real "irish" style dunes (50-80 feet) in Newfoundland. There is Pebble Beach like opportunities all over both coasts. There is "Sand Hills" property in the southern praries. There are lots of spectacular possibilities.

This is a great setting, and a great project, but be reasonable with your statements.

Sounds a little Trumpish, I'll agree.
I haven't seen the property and I'm sure you have. Perhaps I overstated the statement made by a well known architect that this site is, "one of the top 10 sites he's ever seen for a golf course".
I'll let Ben reveal the architect if he so chooses.
I hope you get to work on one of the many better opportunities that abound in your country.

Ian,
I'd love to see world-class golf in Newfoundland.  How does the weather compare to Scotland/Ireland?

By the way, the people of Newfoundland took in many people flying trans-Atlantic on 9/11.  They were incredibly hospitable to those who's trips were interrupted on that horrible day.  The citizens of the USA are eternally indebted to our friends in NF.

Dan,

The season starts late - early June really - but finishes the same as other areas - late October. I was told (when I was there) that it was the Labrador current that causes the late start - but others would likely know more.

WAE,

The best site in Ontario is in a provincial park called the Sand Banks in Grand Bend. I'm glad the land is protected from development. Sometimes the best sites should be left pristine, rather than becoming golf courses.

To my good friend Ian Andrew, who said "very overstated", I would disagree.

Between permitting and business restrictions due to length of season, I feel we do have one of the best sites remaining for golf in the country.

The course will be a daily-fee, although there will be a small membership as well.

The website has been updated with a few of the articles from the last week - www.cabotlinks.com

It's also the site of Canada's only single malt whisky distillery, I think. It's called Glen somethingorother.

Ben,

His reference was to this being a top 10 site in the world....... not Canada.....nor North America, but the world.

After seeing raw Irish dunesland two weeks ago, I struggle with a bold statement like that. My issue has more to do with peoples over-exuberence than your actual site.

Ben, why don't you compare the site to a known piece of land (another course), so that people can understand what a great project you have.

Interesting discussion about this site. Where in Canada could you actually build a better course and get it through approvals? There are some dramatic spots in Cape Breton, on the west coast, and I understand there are some breathtaking spots in Newfoundland.
As for not developing the dunes site Sand Hills Park, I've always thought having tourists throw beer cans into the bushes while walking over the sand hills to the leave garbage on the beach was so much better than having a golf course. Sometimes, I think, we'd be better off with more golf courses in these spots. It didn't hurt Scotland any.
