My California trip is just a couple days away.  I am playing
Cypress Point Notice the impressive intamcy starting on 7 & The wickedly sloped green at 9
Spyglass Hill The 17th green is amazing
San Francisco GCThe Tarantula bunker on 3 and watch that land after 18's drive
Olympic ClubDrainage?
Pebble BeachThe 11th green is the most severe, check it out
Pasatiempo(maybe if time permits)

For those that have been out there what are things that are must do or must haves out there.  For example a certain drink or meal at a club or whatever.  Your help is greatly appreciated.

Olympic Club   Drainage?

The winter conditions at Olympic have improved greatly in the past few years but it is all relative to when the rain falls.  We haven't had any measureable amount rain for almost 2-weeks so conditions should be just fine.

The photo below is from behind the 5th green looking northwest up the 4th fairway and way up on the hill is the second tee.  The brownish hillside wasn't even visible from this location a few years ago, I would venture to guess that 60% of the trees have been removed to open things up.

Nick-
I visited Monterey for the first time in the summer of '03 and was not prepared. No matter how many photos or info you have gotten there is no way to be ready for what is really out there. Here are some impressions I had.

Cypress Point & Pasatiempo- Marvel in the bunkering and the great routing. At CP, AM utilizes two dunes on the property for a number of holes and one never feels repetition. One dune supports the 1st green, 2nd tee, 13th green and 14th tee, while as Clayman said there is some intimacy in the north corner (another dune), 6th green, 7th-10th tee, 11th green - 13th tee. This same approach is used at Pasatiempo but with a barranca instead. Many ravines run through Pasa and there used rather well through the second nine. There's the carry and left on 10, division of 11 & 12, left on 13, cross on 15,16 and 18. One barranca even "runs out" across 14 fairway. Biggest surprises of each CP- the whole experience, hole #4; Pasa- the speed they have the greens for the amount of contour, how long the course plays.
Pebble- The routing also amazed me, but I was disappointed at the number of distractions one has while playing, i.e. the roads, traffic, pedestrians, gawkers, etc. The 8th is great but I was surprised by how little the fanfare is for the 14th green. That thing is awesome. One distraction I had was how there seemed to be chipping areas around some greens that just felt out of place. Wish I could remember the holes but there were a few that just didn't jibe with me.
Spy-Wasn't really impressed except by the "Blind Pew" hole, #4 I think. A green tucked into a dune below the fairway and skinny as a rail. There were some other good holes but this is my first impression. I also remember some bunkering wrapped around a tree that actually looked cool.
You'll have a great time. Please post some pix so we can enjoy the views that are constantly haughting my dreams.

Mike,

Most of what I know about Olympic is from watching the last US Open they had there. The picture you linked to makes it look beautiful, nothing like the dark, intimidating nightmare I recall from televsion. Is the difference entirely due to the tree removal you mentioned? Or did you just post a photo from a particularly inviting point of view?

For a great dinner The Old Bath House in Pacific Grove just a short distance outside the Del Monte Forest on Lovers Point is outstanding.
Have a great trip.

Mike Benham, I'm glad you picked-up on my little joke. See, I was in SF this last year, for just a few hours, and I was scheduled to play the O club for my first time. Well, the g-d's conspired agin me, and caused a wash-out. Since I ended up in PG, and golfed the backnine, I suppose the conspiracy really was a blessing.

I'm thinking about starting a "Should Nick Pozaric be banned from GCA" thread for posting the details of this trip in the middle of winter. ;D

I posted this photo because it is the most striking to show the improvements made with the tree clearing.

Although there is lots of work left to do, it takes time and the support of the membership to get it done.  Only time will tell on how much progress is made.

Many holes on the back nine still need work, check out #7 and #18

Nick:

It's always something isn't it?  I'm on a university faculty, so I'm mostly busy during fall and spring semesters.  My summers are more flexible, but then I don't have the money or access.  :'(

I have gotten to Monterey to play on a couple of occasions by tagging along on my wife's business trips.  Played Rancho Canada (East and West), Laguna Seca, and Bayonet and Black Horse at Fort Ord.  Last April finally took the plunge and played Pebble Beach.

Love Monterey and San Francisco - one of my favorite places & cities in the world.

I'm far from a tree-hater and in general I enjoy woodland golf courses. But there's no question that the cleared-out holes in those photos are very nice. I gather that all this clearing has happened since the course was last on television. How much of it had taken place before the 2004 US Junior Amateur?

Is it just the holes I recall or does Olympic have more fairways that slope up on the left and down on the right than vice-versa? It looks like a course that would be kinder to a lefty slicer than a righty slicer.

Your wife will love Pacific Grove,  (picture postcard stuff along the coast).

Further to the In N Out Burger comments.

I was wondering if there was an ideal 'marriage' between some of the PGA Tour events and some of the fast food outlets.
For example, The Nissan at Riviera is 'In N Out Burger', because of the classic nature of tthe two.
Watching Torrey Pines South the other week makes me think of, well, MM (golden of course).  Perhaps a Big Mac, with Cheese :D :D, a large fries, a large coke (full strength, not diet).  Perhaps that suits many of the US Open courses, post-Open 'cooking'.

Any thoughts? :)

#1 bends to the right
#2 straight, but a fade might be optimal against the contour
#4 bends left
#5 bends right
#6 straight
#7 straight
#9 fade is optimal
#10 fade or straight works
#11 dead straight
#12 straight but slight draw works against contour
#14 straight or draw
#16 draw
#17 straight or draw
#18 all shot shapes welcome, edge to slight draw.
