In October 2000, plans are underway for a merry band of up to 16 golfers to assemble. There are two early nominations as to where the assemble-ing should occur:1. Machrihanish, Scotland2. Sun City/Durban, South AfricaThe final spot won't be determined for six months (maybe by then we will at least have 16 participants in the Discussion Group?!).All nominations must be remote and hopefully,  a majority of people will not have played it.A sense of adventure is crucial.

Both of those sound like fun, I've been to Machrihanish, but would love to go back for more than just the one round I played.  And if we go over to Machrie and others spots in the area, it would get even better.I'd also add Argentina.  The Jockey Club there is an Alastair Mackenzie designed course and there are a number of others.  My parents went there a few years ago and had a wonderful time that including meeting Roberto De Vincenzo.

I agree Machrie would be a must in any west of Scotland adventure and maybe Shiskine too. Throw in Prestwick as a starting point and we might have the most logical area.As for the Jockey Club, it has been ruined and you would be mightily disappointed if you were on a search for MacKenzie's handywork there. Of course Buenos Aires has other appeals....

What about Cape Breton Highlands?

Cape Breton Highlands is a great idea. It seems the best so far, and is certainly better than South Africa. Suffice to say, I would rather travel to play a Stanley Thompson than a Gary Player course. Of course, my mates in Oz might reasonably complain that there isn't a great course in the world further from Australia....but, on the positive side, Aussies do love to travel.I think the Lodge shuts down in the 3rd week of September so that would be the timing, more or less.

Ran, you quote "mates in OZ".  Name two.  Family doesn't count.Cape Breton Highlands is awesome and not tooooo far from the joys of Montreal with all of its delights.

I meant "mats" - my car mats never complain and I always travel with them. And yes, I do have a mat on the passenger and driver side, so there. Plus, thinking about the "delights of Montreal" is a bit optimistic from a guy who is  getting married in three weeks!

Cape Breton Highlands sounds great to me.  I assume that John will make sure that this doesn't conflict with any event that he and I usually attend in September.  Maybe we could even have this right before or after that week.

The Mid-Am at the Cascades is in early September, so CBH could make for agreat east coast trip for you. Can you pick me up in your car on the way to CBH?

I'd be glad to if you can come up with some good courses to stop at on the way, there must be one or two between Virginia and Canada.

I've been rummaging through the GCA attic and found this thread.   Did the event take place and where was it held?  Also, a'hem, I've been rather delinquent in my participation here;  is there an official GCA rendezvous planned for this year?

There was talk about South America, The Jockey club, and one other. Nothing concrete.
FYI, there might be an unprecdented opportunity for a South Africa trip, but that will require some fancy foot work on the part of the elves that make these things happen. CAUTION; It may involve something considerablly off topic, such as visiting at least one winery, so I doubt the turn-out will be too strong. to warrant it, but ya never know.

If Forrest Richardson is to be believed - tenuous at best - Foulpointe is only six holes.  Hardly worth the trip.  Perhaps Forrest can enlighten us?

It's my understanding that this year it's the Buda Cup at Royal Liverpool (Hoylake) in early October. USA vs the rest of us and this is the third such event that has taken place in alternate years to the above.  Painswick and Littlestone were the others.

Watch this space and more details will be forthcomming from Philip Gawith and Mark Rowlinson.

Some come on over, but be prepared to be crushed! Some arses are going to get kicked (please read the last sentence in your best Paul Casey accent ;)).

Tony - hopefully there will indeed be a great gathering of the clans at Hoylake in October, but the Buda Cup - previously the GCA Ryder Cup - is a different event from the retreat, where Mike has listed the previous locations. The previous Ryder Cups were held at Painswick in 04 and Littlestone/Deal in 05.

I think Ran's original idea of Durban was a good one - that will definitely get most GCA folk out of their comfort zone and probably score just about 100% in terms of just about nobody having played the course before.

Just a question:  why is the Buda Cup always in the UK?  Don't you Brits ever spring for travel to come to America and get your butts kicked?  I'm sure we could find a course that was willing to host.

The Americans do wnough butt kicking when they play in the UK.  Home course advantage is not necessary.

Tom, I came to the States last August to play with a variety of GCA characters and it was a terrific experience - real friendship, generosity of spirit (and spirits!) and a considerable education.  I should certainly do it again.
