How far do you live from your home club?
« on: August 18, 2003, 11:40:12 AM »
I was just curious, how far does everyone live from your home club or the course which you play most often?  Does anyone sacrifice driving a good distance to tee it up at a superior course?

It would be great to live right around the corner from your home club, but I personally would be willing to drive further to play a superior course at a great club.

How far do you think is too far?  You definitely want to be able take advantage of the practice facilities and other amenities.

I live across the street from my club (Bass Rocks in Gloucester, MA).  When I work at home, I look at the 15th and 17th greens, and can see the clubhouse.  It's easy to tell if the course is crowded or not.

I would gladly drive the 20 minutes to Essex, or the 25 minutes to Myopia Hunt, or the 25 minutes to Salem, or the 30 minutes to Tedesco, or the 35 minutes to Winchester.

If only any of them would have me!

Just to throw the average distance out of whack, I'm 185 miles from my home club...

I'm 32 miles from my club.  There was one about 4 miles away that I could have joined, but the cost and the quality of the courses led me to the further one.

When I lived in Portland I was 20 miles from my home club.

In both cases, it is an easy drive down country roads to get to the courses.  There are places where I wouldn't want to be 5 miles from my course.

I drive 25 minutes to my club, and it is all of 25 minutes, but not more, always between 23 and 27.  with that being said, i live across the street from another jewish club, and within 5 minutes of 6-7 very good courses(non jewish), but this i do enjoy making the drive out to my club, as it is set out in the farm country and whenever you are out there you feel like you are away from everything, one of the only courses ive played where you really can not see cars drive by on any holes, not many courses can say that these days.

do i sometimes wish i lived closer to my club, absolutely, but i believe it is well worth the trip :D

Shivas - you don't want my answer.

Closest private club to home is 4 miles away.  It is a pile of shit and costs $187.5K to join.

2nd closest is 5.5 miles away.  You played it - Almaden CC.  OK family course, but it costs $100K to join.  You make your own comment.

Next closest is fun and decent, but also is app. $100K.

Any guess why I remain a public course golfer?

To that end, the public course at which I joined the men's club, for whom I do team play and other tourneys, is not the closest public course to me.  But this has to do with the PEOPLE involved far more than the relative course choices.  I do go a little farther to hang with a great group of blokes.

I live about 20 miles from my club but it can take over an hour to get there.  When I just want to hit balls a local driving range is about 2 miles away.

Tom, you could move to Tacoma WA, play an acceptable course and join for something less than $2500. Only risk you run is that if we don't get more members soon you may either be playing public golf again or have the rights to a vegetable garden with a $1 million radio controlled irrigation system.

7.5 miles from my front door and between 15 and 25 minutes from home depending on time and day.  Sunday morning at 7:30 AM is 15 minutes.  Week day afternoons are 25 minutes.

3.3 miles and 5 minutes, closer to 6 now that a new stop sign was put in (can make that up, though  ;D ::) ).  Almost all right turns getting there.

Nothing vastly superior worth travelling to/paying for.  Raleigh CC is perhaps best course in area and is a half hour away (on a weekend), and has $17K initiation and $395 a month dues.  Mine was $1100 7 years ago (is $1000 this year) and is $165 a month.  Have never tired of course.

Of course, even at those 'low' fees, I still don't even come close to making my money's worth if I paid as public by not being a member, since I probably only play there about 2-2.5 times a month.

Cos - believe me, I have friends all over the country who routinely send me messages just like yours... Don't get me started re FL or the Carolinas....

The Silicon Valley part of the SF Bay Area is golf hell.  Interesting, and ironic, that I continue to live here.  I guess we do have good weather...  :'(

I live about 35 km from my home course.  Next year, though, I should be moving to less than 10 km!  ;D

I'm 10 miles from French Creek, but that's 10 miles on a rural state highway.

When I lived in Portland, OR, I was 17 miles from Riverside.  I lived on the west side of town (Beaverton), and Riverside was toward the east, near the Portland airport.  I needed to drive right through downtown to get to Riverside, because back in the 1980's, most of Portland's best courses were over there.  (Portland GC was 5 miles away, but way out of my price range).

I think that the weekend trips to the course were fine, it's that post-work 9-holes that was tough.

I like getting range time or playing a few holes after work, and it'd be tough if the course were too far away.

And, on the non-golf side, you don't want to be hit with a big food minimum if you're too far away to use it during the week or during the winter months when there's snow on the ground.

That said, some clubs will work with non-locals.  Unfortunately, I don't think Augusta National is taking applications at this time  ;)

Tom - couldn't have said it better myself.  My new club's(French Creek) membership and staff is the most friendly I've even been involved with.  My wife said yesterday how much more she enjoys FC than the old club (nameless) because so many people there were stodgy, snooby, and didn't really feel that women belonged on a golf course.

I think Eric Peveto called it the "Norm!" factor (after Norm from Cheers).

I am 5 to 10 minutes from my club depending on traffic. I am thankful for practice at lunch is a real part of life other than in July and August.

I'm about seven miles, and a 10-minute drive (12 minutes if cows from one of the farms along the way are being shepherded across the road), from my home club of Machrihanish. We could have chosen to live in a flat next door to the clubhouse but decided that we needed a few more amenities, hence the farmhouse we eventually settled upon - but in my case, proximity to the golf course was a very definite factor in choosing where we lived.

Cheers,
Darren

Darren - I need to be slapped into better consciousness today, thus I ask:

a) how much do you pay for a membership at Machrihanish? and

b) do they have provisions for overseas members?

I'm doubly fortunate to be 2 miles from a club I've belonged to for 20 years and still love.

Of course, my wife didn't know it was so close when we bought our house 14 years ago.... ;)

2 minute walk to the first tee.  Good club, but certainly better clubs in the Atlanta area I could have joined.  That said, with two kids under 4 years of age, not having to make a 30 minute drive each way to the club allows me to get out to play and practice much more often (still not enough).

I live about 200 yards from the sixteenth tee box of my home course. It takes about 3 minutes to drive to the front and I drive there in my golf shoes.

In Seattle I was about 12 miles away.

Fourteen miles from home and only seven miles from the office. For practice, I am a mile from Carmel Valley Ranch and three miles from The Golf Club at Quail Lodge.

65 miles one-way, but it can take anywhere from 1:10 minutes to as long as three hours to get there!

During construction of the course, one time on a weekday it took me over three hours and Geoff didn't believe me at first. The traffic was that bad. Recetnly Joel Stewart got a taste of it at its worst. We went from Rustic To Disneyland, hwee Joel was going to meet-up with La Famalia, and it took us well over 2 1/2 hours, didn't it Joel?

Tomorrow I'm meeting someone up there around 9:30, and I'm trying to decide which time to leave and which route to take. Given that time, 605 to the 210 and through the back way to the 118. It will be at they very least 2 hours.

danhermann, My cousin lived in Tigard up until two weeks ago. He now lives in the other room. After 34 years he was tired of the rain!

Riverside? That and C-E I never afforded myself the time to play, but all of the other classics yes.

They are:

-PGC
-Waverly
-Lake Oswego
-Tualatin

I love Portland Golf, but hate what they did to Progress Downs.
