Would it be presumtuous to name Lawsonia holes?
« on: February 03, 2008, 01:30:01 PM »
I really can't think of any other designer that has such distictive earthen works, platform greens, and distinctive structure and style of mostly gull wing bunkering through the FWs than Langford-Morreau.

Would it be impertinent for us to have a contest to name the holes at Lawsonia, besides the ever referred to 7th hole, "The Boxcar" hole?

If we do well, could we move on to Ozaukee, WBCC, and other L&Ms?

If there is some support for this, I'll run a survey or contest via IM's and e-mail.  We could start with some hole name suggestions starting with the 1rst.  We could get a half dozen suggestions and then hold a vote, and go through the course hole by hole...  Perhaps give a rationale for your hole name description...

Pity for those of you who haven't played it yet.  But then most of us never played NGLA either Pat Mucci...  ;) ;D 8)

I'll start:

1, 420yd par 4, slight dog leg right, driving range through the FW left, right side native grass, with a diagonal bunker up right side that shouldn't be a problem, yet many skull their first FW flat iron and seem to find themselves over there. The green is open front, sitting on an open appoach shelf with enormous embankment off left side and long left.  Green side bunker just below green surface right side. A moderately undulating green.

I'll suggest a possible hole name:  Shelf. :)

Yes it is.   They have nice hats, too.

I played Lawsonia for the first time today with a couple of GCA guys and loved it.  Easily the best sub $40 course that I have seen.  I thought the greens and their surrounds with the wind provided a great defense against the modern game.  As for naming the holes I will leave that to the experts.

RJ, I'll think obtusely and name the opener "Right Start".

Heh, I think the name for #1 should be "More than you think" because you have to aim one hell of a lot further right than you think.  It does get one into the proper mindset for the course since all the doglegs there turn right!

More seriously, I'd call #9 "Sea" and #13 "Narrows".  I'm partial to the one word hole names.
