Must GCA Book ... and Xmas Is Coming Soon
« on: November 17, 2007, 02:22:15 PM »
Got my much awaited volume of "The Evolution of The Links at The Royal County Down Golf Club".

Yes, 60 pounds ... but oh so worth it in my opinion.

I think if you appreciate fine GCA ... you simply MUST get this book.

Just a fantastic volume by Richard A. Latham.

Best way I can describe this is it combines:
- 1) solid history of the club and the holes themselves (e.g. how the holes came to be, how they've changed, who worked on what, etc.)
- 2) breathtaking photography (on all holes and various vantage points)
- 3) illustrations a la Richard Goodale's "Experience Carnoustie Golf Links" etc. series
- 4) fine detailed explanations to the greens (a first I've ever seen)
- 5) fantastic production quality

Just superbe overall.  There's no question now that I'm getting the Woodhall Spa volume as well.

Let's put it this way, when you head across the pond to play this beauty ... if you're not prepared after reading this cover to cover ... nothing will prepare you.

Is Royal County Down the model for Pine Valley?
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Patrick,
You are quite right about the quality of the book. Mr Latham has put together the best book documenting the evolution of a course I had ever seen until the MacPherson/TOC came along. I haven't played RCD yet, but I will certainly commit the Latham book to memory before I make my pilgrimage to Ireland.

Is the RCD book the same sort of layout & content as the Woodhall Spa book?

I'm assuming yes, but I will let everyone know for sure when I get my copy ... in about a couple of weeks.

I would also put Goerge Bahto's book on NGLA in this category as well from a coverage stanpoint.

Very different though.  For instance, more background in Bahto's volume.  Better photography in Latham's.
