Selling intellectual property about architecture on ebay
« on: August 31, 2007, 12:30:41 AM »
Given the long time desire for many people to see paid raters who give unbiased opinions on golf courses I have always thought one way to fund this would be through ebay.  I think there is a market for selling opinions and am currently giving one a shot.  If this works I believe I will sell other ideas.  Not to give it away but what kind of intellectual property that you create do you think may have a market.  My current auction cost 40 cents to post so I am already making money and it is just hours old..A link  http://tinyurl.com/yo7h4p

In the tradition of Southern oral history, please place another item on ebay titled:  "The Inaugural Hillbilly Tour - Riding Shotgun In Barney's  Milk Truck."

John, you can keep the money and I will discuss spending 8 hours +/- in your vehicle to and from Cusco a few years back, with your permission of course.

As a bonus item,  I would be willing to share your reply to the young cart-baller at Victoria National who asked to play through on the par three tee box a few years back.

Mike,

Send me an email draft of an essay and I will touch it up for your review and put it up for sale.  I'm thinking we will have to cut Ran a piece.  I am not comfortable selling what I told that kid without proof of age...It could violate ebay ethical standards.

If the winning bidder wishes to post the list here on gca.com and have you discuss it, then would you honor the request or are you refusing to speak publicly about the list under any circumstance?

Collect calls will not be accepted as a means to collect a prize and there will be no additional discussion of the list or Dull Access beyond the limits of the auction criteria.

John:

Have you considered the alternative of donating your ideas, opinions and other intellectual property to charity and taking a really healthy tax deduction?

This has to be one of the best threads I have ever read. I am tempted to bid just so I can hang up on you just as you are about to read me your list. But there is no way in hell I am paying over 5 dollars for that. ;D

John,

I am quite interested in the second item.  However I live in Australia and the ebay listing only mentions shipping to the USA.  Will you ship to Australia?  IF so, will it cost more than the $1 it costs to ship to the US.
Ask not what GolfClubAtlas can do for you; ask what you can do for GolfClubAtlas.

Of course.  The winner simply calls me with the password and I read the list over the phone.  I speak Australian.

Can I pay you extra to read the list with a very masculine Norwegian sailor accent?

John, let me get this right. In this world filled with crazies you're going to send a stranger you meet through EBAY that might cost them as little as a dollar to get your telephone number?

John,

I have heard alot about people selling fakes on ebay.  How can I be sure this list is a genuine list of your top 10 courses and not a fake list read by a guy in china?

Ask not what GolfClubAtlas can do for you; ask what you can do for GolfClubAtlas.

Mr Kavanagh, the E-Bay 'Write-up' is not true as you give your list to the GCA rating thing and although you deleted it I still have a copy! I will udercut John to $3, and thats for his top 12 ;)

This is a good post!

John,

You've outdone yourself with this thread.  Congratulations!

I'd like to see more, and I'm really interested to learn if you can find anyone from outside GCA to buy any of these.

Mathew,

Like most renowned architectural pundits I play many new courses each year.  My list has changed measurably since your most valuable thread.  You might recall that on your list I only included courses where I had played at least 36 holes.  This will include hit and runners.

Renowned golf architect pundit John Kavanaugh will reveal the top ten courses that he has ever played to the winning bidder. Upon successful payment Mr. Kavanaugh will provide the winning bidder with a phone number and secret password which will need to be spoken to receive the list verbally. The list will be read twice at a speed which will allow easy transcription and no small talk will ensue. This list will become the property of the winning bidder along with a personal guarantee that Mr. Kavanaugh will not publish or discuss the list with any other persons or publications.

John,
What would the price be without the personal guarantee that you won't publish or discuss the list with anyone else? I think you are limiting yourself with having only one auction--you could hold monthly auctions as your top 10 evolves.

Quote
The winning bidder will receive a phone number where he can call and be read his favorite Shakespeare passage in a very masculine Norwegian sailor accent. The winning bidder shall send with his check or cash a request of what passage he would like read of volume to not exceed two minutes time. If the winning bidder does not choose a passage the seller shall choose one at random from his extensive collection. At this time the seller will send a password and phone number to the winning bidder and agree to read said passage upon the receipt of the phone call and password. No small talk will ensue and is not a part of the purchase price. This is good for one phone call only. note: The seller has never read Shakespeare aloud and will have to learn a very masculine Norwegian sailor accent.

John,
I think I saw a series of very masculine Norwegian sailor accent lessons on another eBay auction, but that may eat into your profit--they're pretty pricey as you can imagine.

I could see the bid going twice as high if you offered to read it in a Norwegian trøndersk accent.

Thank you Dr., I realized that Shakespeare would not sell so I went to HW Wind read with erhu music playing in the background as it has more of a golf architecture theme.  http://tinyurl.com/328e6d

Radical discounts aren't going to help get this horse back in the barn!
