Courses where you punted.
« on: June 04, 2007, 08:22:29 AM »
I seem to recall a famous story where Tommy refused to play a hole at Garden City.  I have been a resident of Illinois my entire life and lived in the Chicago area for ten years but still have never played Cog Hill.  Where or what courses that seemed like a natureal play have you taken a pass?  You have the protest categorie of guys like Tommy and the got something better to do categories of guys like me.  If you have the time, give a little back story as I did with the Warren Course so we may understand.

A small list for me.

Cog Hill, RTJ Trail, Warren, Cabo San Lucas and anything and everything in Hawaii.

Whistling Straits. An easy two-hour drive from my house. Site of a major and majors-to-be.

I just can't swallow the green fee. (Walked it, though -- cool course....I'd love to play it.)

There are plenty of courses that I've punted when I was invited back for another round.  Rich Harvest Farms, the overhyped club west of Chicago is the poster child in my experience of a place I wouldn't want to play again, even though it's supposed to be a gem.

First trip to Merion, punted on Moselem Springs when member asked if we wanted to eat lunch and then have another crack @ Merion East.  Wasn't to hard to do.

I passed on a round at what was Indian Hills the first time I went to Oklahoma because I was able to play at Southern Hills.  A no brainer.   ;D

By the time I was back in town Indian Hills was no more and it was being worked on by Tripp Davis and the name changed to Cherokee Hills.

The only one that comes to mind somewhat recently is Simper and I replaying Hunter Ranch in CA for the $15 replay rate as opposed to driving 2 hrs and playing La Purisima in Feb. 06.

As for New England courses I've always wanted to see (publics), there are very, very few I haven't been to already.

On my golf-filled honeymoon to the Monterey Peninsula, my wife and I punted on an afternoon round at Pebble Beach in favor of a drive down to Big Sur on an absolutely gorgeous day.  Considering the green fee and the beauty of that road trip, I certainly don't regret it...

Malone Golf Club in Belfast. We could have had a match with some of their members on a trip to Ireland. But it isn't a links course so I vetoed the idea. I hear it is a very nice parkland course.

I played a round at Pocantico Hills and decided against a second 18 at Century in order to beat NYC traffic to get back to Philadelphia in a reasonable amount of time.

Otherwise, my trips are planned in advance after a lot of research.  I tend to add to the courses planned and have never punted from the itinerary.

I too punted a round at Pebble once for sack time with a new gf. I had already played it 25 plus times though. I punted Tralee after 1 hole because of driving rain storm and came back the next evening to play. I would punt the Ole Miss course if they had one.

Like Hal Mumme, I have taken the punt out of the playbook - at least as it pertains to the architecture.

That said, I did drop back fifteen when the farm gate to the Sheep Ranch was locked and the gatekeeper did not arrive as scheduled (trespassing punt).  Also, just two weeks ago I played Southern Pines when I could have easily played #2 (economic punt).

Tiger, you'll be delighted to know that we're visiting Ole Miss with our daughter in a couple of weeks.  Hoddy Toddy!

My wife and I were in Bar Harbor, Maine last year, and we decided to do a whale watching trip, instead of playing Kebo Valley...HUGE mistake.  It was freezing on the boat, basically everyone got sick and we got an obstructed view of exactly one whale.  That evening we drove to Cadillac Mountain to watch the sunset, and you can see Kebo from top.  Even from high above, I could tell that it would have been better than stupid whale watching.

I think it's called "Cannon's Run."

I was on the driving range at the Olympic Club ready to pay $125 when the fog started coming in so heavy I couldn't see past the 50 yard marker. So I punted and drove down to Palo Alto muni where there was total sunshine.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

The hardest punt of my golf life was last month, when I walked up at twilight to Bandon Resorts, asked if they had a twilight rate, they said all courses were open and I could tee off alone on any one of them, but at full freight.  I punted.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only guy on line here that will draw the line in the sand on a price.

I once punted Olympic, in order to get home in time for my wedding anniversary.

The terrible thing is that I can't recall what I gave my wife that year, while the memory of missing out on Olympic lingers yet.

I lived in Phoenix for 7 years and skipped the TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course - although I saw plenty of it during each year's golf tournament.  IMO, for the money there are plenty of better options.

Regarding TPC's - I've lived in Jacksonville, FL the past eight years and I never punt at the opportunity to play TPC Sawgrass.

In June 2002, my "head coaches" schedule forced me to stay home and punt away a booked weekend at the American club, 2 rounds each on the River & the Straits.

As usual, the head coach made a good call; 9 months later our daughter showed up.....and I can always go back to Kohler :-\.

The Eleveth Commandment
XI. "Thou shalt not punt on a fine golf course at any time."

(of course, family does come first!)

But the best I ever punted on was the private club at Pumpkin Ridge (Oregon).  Pretty dumb, huh?

Tom Roewer - have you gotten back to Moselem Springs?  Obviously, it's not of Merion's caliber, but it's a darn fine golf course in its own right.

Tiger, the Ole Miss course is fun for cart ball (coolers, smokes, etc..).  Conditioning is horrible.  The only university course I have ever played where outside coolers of beer are encouraged.

Mike, have a good time in Oxford.  Go to Taylor Grocery one night and make sure you take some time to walk around Faulkners house and property.

I may have a winner.  I punted on The Old Course.

I was in St. Andrews for a weekend in late April, I had not touched a golf club in over 6 months and I could get on, but I passed.  Although I did walk the entire course.  I then played one round on The New Course with rental clubs and then had to get back to London.

I decided that my game was not in adequate condition for a round on The Old Course.  No one else on this site needs to agree with my decision, but this occurred in 1993 and I still have not been back and still have not yet played The Old Course, yet I do not regret my decision.  I will get back and I will play The Old Course.

I punted at Pebble Beach and Valderrama--my general rule is to punt when greens fees exceed $300.

I do not believe I've ever actually gotten to the point of showing up at a course without playing other than in bad weather last year at Hilton Head National.

I'm pretty much willing to play anyplace once, there's quite a few that I'm not in any hurry to go back to though.

David Miller, your post an mine makes me wonder... for those of us that do punt on playing a course based on price, where are our particular price break-points, or our personal lines in the sand?

I think I'll start a new thread to ask as a follow-up to punting in general.
