Has critical acclaim ever been achieved by hosting a large outing of critics?

Of all the large outings ever hosted or attended by a group of GCA posters I am having trouble remembering when a course came out better then going in.  Tobacco Road could be the exception but that is now starting to deteriorate with time and reflection.  Would you invite us if they were you?  What are the attributes of a course that may benefit from a large group of internet and or secret society critics congregating in a large group at one time.  Golf writers do not count as they like everything and need another gig knowing nobody spit in the complimentary buffet.

It can backfire as well.  Baltusrol hosted a panelist day a few years ago and it rained heavily and the course was a mess.

Barny I think all in all these sorts of promotion work well for the course. The course can put its best foot forward maximizing its strengths and can minimize its weaknesses.

I hosted a bunch of architects (including your brother) at Pacific Dunes before it opened, and that turned out okay.

I would say that the reputations of all of the courses in the Buda Cup series so far (Dornoch, Brora, Painswick, Littlestone, Deal, Hoylake and Wallasey) survived intact if not enhanced.

What alternative thoughts are rattling about in that huge brain of yours, compadre?

Last year's trio of Strantz courses at the Dixie Cup came out pretty well too. Most, maybe all of the courses at the GCA events have been selected by people who have an eye for good gca - I'd be surprised if any came out with a big hit on their reputation. Have there been any?

It let British Journelists play the course in the early days because thier copy was read world-wide.

Hidden Creek may have benefited from hosting GCA.com'ers in 2005.

I couldn't guarantee that everyone thought more of the course after that event than before it, but, the impression I received was such.

I may host another GCA.com get together in the fall or next spring, at either Hidden Creek or at one of the clubs in Northern New Jersey designed by "Steamshovel" Banks.

But, before doing so, Tom Doak must post a Performance Bond.  ;D

I think the enormous advantage I had was that the three critical speakers, each, with a seperate discipline, were available to present their views and answer any questions.

Roger Hansen, the driving force behind Hidden Creek, gave his perspective, then, Bill Coore gave his, then, Jeff Riggs the Superintendent gave his.

That comprehensive presentation coupled with playing the golf course was insightful.

If we return to Hidden Creek, I'd certainly like Bill and/or Ben to attend as Bill was terrific.   I could have listened to him for hours, if not days.

If we go to one of the two Banks courses in Northern New Jersey, I'd like to get Gil Hanse and George Bahto who are familiar with both golf courses, along with other architects, including Tom Doak, but, only if he posts a Performance Bond.

Trump Bedminster has indeed seen critical acclaim shortly after extending itself to a large # of publication raters (critics...maybe, maybe not??).

You are quite right, John.

When I hosted a group at St Andrews Beach last February, the spittle and venom was flying in all directions, and still is.

It's an interesting exercise, if nothing else.
