Great trees that would be replaced.
« on: April 10, 2007, 09:34:08 AM »
Not to long ago the tree on the 18th at Pebble was replaced at a fantastic expense.  I'd say the Eisenhower tree would replaced in kind.  Would you? Or what others?

A couple of moderns:

I'll go with the first at Barona.

The bonsai tree on the 10th? at Rustic.

It would be interesting to see what would be done with the Bogart tree at Riviera.

Gotta go with the 12th at Stanford.

I like the two forming the goal posts guarding the entrance to Sahalee's par-5 11th.

Paul,

Of course he did but the question is will it be replaced when it dies.

Every single one of those mangroves that used to grace the swamp in front of the first tee at the Old Course back in the Cambrian age.  Bob Huntley or Pat Mucci or Tommy Naccarato may remember them.....

Terry;  Why did I know you would chime in?  I suspect that if the elm in the right center of the 18th fairway near the green were to meet its demise a different means to protect the right side of that green would be found.  But I would leave that to our consulting architect.  I truly hope Redanman can get to Chicago and see that hole so that he can add it to the list of what he considers stupid trees.  As Tom Paul says, "its a great big world."

Without the two framing cottonwoods, the 12th at Prairie Dunes would be merely difficult.

Wasn't there an enormous tree adjacent to a green on Winged Foot East that met it's demise in the 80's?

I seem to remember the unique location of the tree almost up against the green looked fun.  It probably hurt the maintenance of the green, however....
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

i'm guessing no due to the expense but not doing so will hurt the design of the hole, unfortunately

Totally agree on this one!

I also would suggest the tall fir trees down the right side of the par 5 11th at Pumpkin Ridge Witch Hollow. It is still amazing to remember young Tiger taking it over the top of those trees to make eagle during the '96 AM.

I'd cut it down with my own teeth if they'd let me.  That tree doesn't define the hole, it ruins it.

Not sure how they could replace it, but the huge tree on the 11th at Westchester (I think it is the 2nd for members) completely dictates how the hole is played.

Jeff,

Not sure but I think Brad may have been kidding..

John Kirk,

Do you really think that 12 on PD would be difficult without the tree gates? Tricky green but downwind it would be just a little flip in there..

Sean,

For whatever reason I found every hole difficult during my weekend at Prairie Dunes.

On the last day, I birdied 8 and 9, believe it or not, en route to a quick 87.

The cottonwood gates at 12 make the hole very difficult.  I like that hole.

The fifth hole at Crystal Downs would be wildly disappointing, IMO, without the tree.

Augusta has already planted a smaller tree directly behind the Eisenhower tree. I do not know if the ET is healthy- it certainly looks like it, but they have already prepared for its demise.
