"He [his father] tells me just a couple of things and then says: 'Just go out there and do it.' I didn't really putt particularly well on the front nine but I hit a good putt on nine for bogey.

"Then I hit a wonderful iron off the tee on 10 and I thought: let me just utilize those two markers and take them forward on the back nine, and get back to even par for the day.

I don't remember ever seeing anybody hit an iron off #10, even back in the 1980s.  Was this common?

2-iron.  That kid was long and the hole was shorter in those days.  I can't remember whether he used an iron all four days or even whether an iron on 10 was part of his game plan.  He was leaking oil at the time and might have decided to hit a club he felt comfortable with.

It wasn't unusual from the old tees. Even relatively short hitters used 3w's back then.

I've seen Tiger hit at least 20 tee shots off #10 over the years and I seem to remember him hitting 2 iron occasionally or 3 wood, depending on the wind.  In recent years, almost always 3 wood.
Ironically, the first round tee shot off #10 in 1997 was one of the few I missed.  I saw every shot of his front nine 40, went to get something to eat, and didn't catch up to him and Faldo until his chip-in on #12.  Fortunately, I saw pretty much everything else he did that week.

In 1988 when Sandy Lyle won, he hit 1 or 2 iron off of #10 every day, it was a different game, time and world then but Dude absolutely ripped an iron off the tee every time.  He was strong and long.

In my mind, the 10th hole at Augusta has been 485 yards forever, is this not true? What is it today? What was it in 1997? How about 1933?

I am looking at a scorecard this minute from the late 80's and it is 485. Don't know about 33. I seem to remember always thinking it was longer that 13 until the changes started to occur.

In 1933 the green was tucked behind the old MacK bunker now in the middle of the fw. It was a much shorter hole. I would guess 410 or so.

The 10th still plays 485 from the member tees, but it plays down a steep hill.
