Rick Shefchik's "Amen Corner"
« on: March 06, 2007, 07:25:01 PM »
Quite enjoyed Shefchik's forthcoming murder mystery novel about the Masters. I'm trying to reach him and recall seeing his name on GCA once in a while. Anyone have a contact? He's not in the GWAA book.

Brad:

Just send him an IM.  He has responded quickly in the past.

Brad and I have made contact. (I should have checked GCA after 1 p.m. today, but I was doing a photo shoot for a story about my book. The demands of fame can be quite crushing ;D.)

I'm extremely glad to hear you enjoyed it, Brad. It should be in bookstores by March 15.

Rick,

Were ANGC interested spectators in what you wrote out of interest?

Some of your characters discovered that well before you did.

Here is part of Booklist's description of Amen Corner:

"a Minneapolis cop, on medical leave, wins the U.S. Publinx Championship and qualifies for the Masters. Knowing he's overmatched, Sam Skarda goes to Augusta for the experience and finds himself in the midst of a murder investigation when the club's Rules Committee chairman is found facedown in the pond fronting the famous twelfth green. Shefchik combines a surprisingly grisly plot and a convincing villain with plenty of more or less realistic golf action."

Sounds cool, Rick!  I'm really looking forward to reading it.

P.S.  Does Sam make the cut?  No, don't tell me...

James,

I never contacted Augusta National. Nor did I talk to any members of the club (for their own protection, mostly; if the club didn't care for the book, I didn't want to get any of the members in trouble for having talked to me.)

I did extensive reading and research, though, including a visit to the Masters in 2005. I hope ANGC will accept the book in the spirit in which it was written -- entertainment, nothing more. As the host of a very public annual tournament, and the subject of other works of fiction before mine, I figured ANGC was fair game.

Of course, if they were to make a big stink about it, well ... that wouldn't be a bad outcome, either!  8)

Rick, I hope you were able to work in a few plot lines to stir it up, like Anna Nicole having a torrid affair with Hootie or some such.  That would certainly generate the "buzz".

Did you have any cops proof read the book for critical-technical authenticity?  I know a guy you could have asked...  ;) ::) ;D

I ordered it and assume it will come after the 15th...

Dick,

I did had a cop buddy who helped me on police procedure, but the position of full-time Cop Go-To Guy on my staff is definitely open. I'll keep you in mind on the next one. Thanks, and thanks for the order.

Eagerly awaiting my pre-ordered copy from Amazon.  I'm a huge consumer of murder mysteries, hopefully to add multiple Shefchik works to Burke, Hillerman, Parker, Iles, Grisham, Turow, and others as favorite authors.

Rick, when you do a national signing tour, I'll catch you in Georgia!

After some of the Green Jackets have read it, he might not be welcome in Georgia!

When will it be in stores?

Before the snow melts on Oak Ridge No. 14 -- where, just this morning, I saw a herd of nine healthy deer crossing over from No. 15.

Rick is hoping they'll be in the stores by next week sometime. But the book business isn't the best-run or most predictable thing in the world, if your name isn't, say, Dan Brown.

Of course, Rick's a much, much better writer. Just not so rich.

Rick, it seems a lot of writers are taking a second bite of that whole Dan Brown line.  Maybe you can work something into the concept of the Sang Grael theme.  Perhaps the Fed Ex cup as the golf's holy grail...?  Or, perhaps with the new golden child due this summer... Elin as the vessel carrying the royal golf blood line... ::) :o ;D

I'm also eagerly awaiting my copy, but if the words "sacred feminine" appear anywhere in the book, I will not be happy.

 :)

It also makes a wonderful gift, especially to your local golf writer.

What a coincidence!

"The Sacred Feminine" was Rick's original title.

Then he got to thinking: Maybe Hootie and the boys would be insulted.

And "The Sacred Masters" didn't seem to capture the flavor of the book.

So: "Amen Corner."
