Timberstone; Iron Mountain, MI

On every other website on Michigan golf besides GCA, Timberstone has been spoken of with great zeal, almost reverence. I know Golf Digest once gave it five stars, and still gives it 4.5.

Yet each time I ask of it, or mention it in any way here, I get no response at all. It is our hope to make the trip to the UP to play Greywalls and Timberstone, perhaps sometime next Spring. Is there some reason this is NOT a great destination?

I am originally from the area and have played Timberstone many times. The setting is very pretty among some good stands of pine along a ridge.

I have never heard anyone say it is a bad course but I personally am not sure it is worth a major trip (Unlike Greywalls which is very worthy).

I think you have to keep the rankings in relative perspective. It was probably the best course in the U.P. prior to Greywalls, but up there the pickin's are slim. There are a few holes at Timberstone that I really like however most are just pretty common and a few of the downhill holes are a bit extreme for my taste. Some people love them.

All things considered it is a decent course on an awkward parcel of land. I guess I would  not want to sound as critical except for having seen what they did at Greywalls to create a fabulous course on what I would consider a far more challenging property.

Conditions are usually good during mid summer but spring and fall can be a bit spotty because of the short season and the number of pines along the fairways and surrounding the greens. The U.P. in this area is generally sand over rocks not loam over sand.

It is certainly worth a stop over if you are headed for Marquette, but otherwise I wouldn't travel too far out of the way to play there.

GD's Places to Play public ratings are nothing more than a popularity contest,sometimes aided by course owners requesting players to stuff the ballot.

Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Ackward land, extreme downhill ........ sounds fantastic!! My kind of place. But I will assume Greywalls will be OK enough to stop there too  ;)

Thanks for the input;
