Maine seems to win hands down.  Why doesn't it get the love deserved round these parts.  Are the resorts high priced or bargains when compared to more obvious choices such as Michigan, Wisconson, Washington, Oregon or other northern locals.  Where will $2000 bucks take you and your family in Maine during the summer...

Beautiful....I assume if you stay at the Inn, you still have privileges at PN.  At least that's how it used to be, now I think their site has been changed from "golf at Prout's Neck" to "playing privileges at local courses."

I had a friend growing up who said this was his favorite course, and finally seeing pics of it, it is very pretty.

Also, stay tuned for pics/comments from my recent Columbus Day Maine trip to Cape Arundel, Wawenock (9), Northeast Harbor, Kebo Valley, Castine (9), and Samoset.....

Oops,  can you stay and play at Prouts Neck, or could I.  Now I'm confused...is the term golf resort offensive.

John,

I understand the biggest problem with courses in Maine is, no matter where you are staying, "you can't get there from here."

Aren't they famous for saying things like that?

When is the "Black Fly Season"?
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Shame on you, John.  The obvious choice is your brother's own, Dell Urich Municipal in Tucson, Arizona.  During the summer months, it costs $12 to walk anytime after 12:00 noon, $20 before that.  Great course, great fun, and usually in very firm and fast condition during the summer, save for the several hours after a monsoon.

And it's a dry heat!

Well...if you are along the ocean, they aren't too bad....but if you are anywhere where woods are prevalent, which is pretty much 95% of the state of Maine, then they don't really abate until late May or June....June 15-July 1 in the North country.  They aren't that bad, but the more wooded a course is, the more likely you are to see flies (despite the fact people call them "no-see-ums."  In Maine, they don't have the suburbs to break up the great stretches of woods like around Boston to make the flies go away.

My family has a lake house in Island Falls, 90 mi. N of Bangor on I-95.  The flies are quite bad until 7/1 at least up there, put a bug zapper out at night and watch the fireworks....(you might be a redneck if....)
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

I'm a big Cape Arudnel fan . . . please post many pics soon!  I played it only once 5 years ago and my wife, her aunt and uncle got caught in a mini-noreaster and got soaked to the bone.  It says a lot that when it cleared we finished that last 6 or so holes as we were there for a wedding, not a golf trip!

I loved the huge modernized locker room too ;)

Oregon.  Yes Bandon is nice, but Bend has perfect dry weather, low winds and no bugs.  When you aren't playing golf you can fish, hike or site see.

For you early season folks, May offers the unique combination of skiing in the morning and golf in the afternoon.

Tough to beat that combo.

Michigan has to be up there with their resorts plus it stays light in Northern Michigan until 10PM. You can get in a lot of rounds. Arcadia Bluffs, Greywalls, Treetops come to mind.

WH is right...  I've played a good deal of golf in Maine, and lived in Oregon for 9 years, and I give the nod to Oregon.

Portland has wonderful municipal courses, Bend/Redmond is full of fine golf, and there's Bandon.

But there's also the Palmer course in K-Falls, mountain golf like Tokatee and Elkhorn, and even pasture golf in the mid-Willamette Valley.

Oregon's private clubs also have a very generous reciprocity policy.   I think I played most every private club in metro-Portland at least once (I was a member at Riverside, which helped - but members at clubs elsewhere are generally welcomed with open arms and a smile).  Of course, you pay green fees, but you can get on.

John Kavanaugh,

If you think Maine has the best public golf, I cannot wait until you visit WA.

I'm know for damn sure we don't have any tees on the beach (especially not 6 of them) or any greens on any beach (especially not 5 of them) or any holes along any beach (ESPecially not 2 of them!)....

....but I can assure you just about everything else

We got water, trees, hills, everything for the best public golf in the world.

Heck, to be honest, I wouldnt be surprised if WA is head and feet above Maine as far as public golf goes

See ya soon in WA,

JW

oh, p.s. The golf is cheaper over here too

Jordan,

I would argue that the only thing WA state has over Maine is larger mountains and undoubtedly more championship tests.

It is also a bigger state, so there may be a few more public options.

When you say WA has water, trees, hills, and cheap greens fees, it sounds to me like you are describing Maine.  I bet the average greens fee for 18 holes of public golf in Maine is less than $40.

The best thing about Maine golf is that most of the courses have history, and most are low-key operations.  There are few opulent clubhouses, cart kids, starters, and mandatory cart fees.

Come to think of it, there are some "mountain" (the eastern variety anyway) courses in Maine at Sunday River, Sugarloaf, etc, but I will take the ocean over the mountains any day.

Add NH and VT to Maine, and you have a great and diverse area for golf, in probably half the area of WA state.

And if you want to talk great courses....Cape Arundel, Penobscot Valley, Belgrade Lakes, Sugarloaf, Manchester CC, Portsmouth CC, Ekwanok, Burlington CC, Rutland CC ...etc...versus...Sahalee and Tumble Creek?

Oy Vey!

Does anyone doubt that Jordan has never been to Maine? Michigan? Nebraska?... etc.

This thread has an ethos that illustrates just how lucky we all are.

Adam, Brad,

My post was for JK.
I know that, even without playing in too many other states, WA doesn't have that many great tracks.
Some, but not many.
So, I was being sarcastic.

I figured John could appreciate that

Jordan, For anyone who frequents Gold, Mtn it's not ricidculous to think you could feel that way about your state.

One of the weird things going on in this thread is JK's lack of definition for "finest".

I've been to Maine, in fly season, and the golf is far superior to the fishing. But still not so desirable that I'd want to do it again.

Michigan's a good call, but so is Illinois, and the rest of the midwest.

New Mexcio seemed pretty good on the public side. Mostly because the private side is so abysimal. And there are no bugs. Nebraska also fits with almost every town having at least nine holes. That sure makes for quantity and from the small sampling of quality I've had, not bad at all. Also, there doesn't seem to be the crowding issues in the more rural areas. Which any serious public golfer can't help but appreciate.

For what it's worth, I think the state with the worst variety of public access golf is.....  Delaware.

Dan,

Them's fightin' words. I grew up in Delaware so that really hurts. You need to realize that there are only 12 people who live in the state (I only count the part above the canal--below the canal is another country!). For them there is Delcastle--straightforward and pleasing----, Three Little Bakers---quite special in parts and overall not a bad hole, Porky Oliver---originally Wilm. CC and has a few excellent holes--- Rock Manor's rehab seems to be coming along nicely, Back Creek is a blast and Frog Hollow has some nice moments.

      Now ,are you properly humbled?

BTW, one of my all time favorite episodes of ( Damn, I'm gettin' senile--the show that setup funny situations) was the one about Delaware being "closed" for the day.
