Let me get this straight.

Rich prefers Machrihanish if Darren organizes.  Otherwise he offers his back garden for all GCA to sh-- in.

I prefer Alwoodley if Nick is the front man.  Its not often a guy offers to significantly help out a large party of mostly strangers.  If this is no good then I prefer Pennard and will do much of the legwork.  

Craig likes Dornoch, but he also likes Pennard.  Sounds like a two week holiday.

Darren is for Machrihanish, but he is incognito.

Ran is for Pennard, but he is well and truly in hibernation.

Tony is, well, he is Irish.

Mark P. has doubts about Dunaverty so he is for Dornoch.  

Mark B. is easy so long as we play in a 3 day window.  Sounds a bit like Ford and the choice of Model T colours.  

Any other thoughts?

St.Enodoc with a combination of Saunton, RND, Burnham & Berrow, and Perranporth.

A chance to visit one of Sean's 'Holy Trinity' of courses.

Actually, Nick Leefe is offering to help at Alwoodley and to help access Ganton.  Such a deal!

The whole point about going to Alwoodley in 2007 is that it is Centenary Year, the centenary of the very first MacKenzie course....

It is hard to argue with Mark on that point. It is a haul from Alwoodley to Ganton. In fact it is long haul from Ganton to anywhere golf wise. I would love to do big Mac and/or Dornoch as a personal preference.

My daughter is doing post-grad at Uni of Wales (Swansea), living in Langford. I'm probably goingto be visiting her next year, and with Pennard just down the road.........

Actually, virtually all of the suggestions sound good to me.  I have a slight reservation about Machrihanish, because, as you say, I'm not dieing to get back to Dunaverty and I'm not sure where else is near enough (though I do wonder if there's an easy ferry to Arran for Shiskine).  

Of the other courses mentioned Dornoch/Brora sounds great, as does Burnham & Berrow/Saunton/St. Enodoc.  North Berwick and Alwoodley are both reasonably close to me, so seem less attractive but I'd still be there like a flash.

In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Nick, who lives in North Leeds close to Alwoodley, says it is 45-60 minutes to Ganton.

Maybe he drives too fast!

It is a good drive from Alwoodley to Ganton.  The roads have improved over the years.  However Ganton is one of the very best inland courses in Britain and well worth the effort to get to.
Moortown is also a very short distance from Alwoodley, maybe just over a mile.  There are also quite a number of other courses close by such as Headingley, Sand Moor and Pannel which is just a bit further away.

Pennard is a joyous destination. Tenby and Porthcawl are good additions. Celtic Manor, the site of the 2010 Ryder Cup, could also go into that rotation.

Another triumverate would be Woodhall Spa, Hunstanton and Brancaster.

Bill, I have not found anywhere in the UK 45 to 60 minutes from the city centre. Once on the M, the driving is a lot faster for the lost american types.

To prevent an impasse and delayed decision making I propose we condense all this and get to voting for a site.

At this stage we have 4 very good options.

1.     Dornoch plus Brora, Golspie, Struie.

2.     Machrihanish plus Dunaverty (Is Prestwick viable via ferry?)

3.     Alwoodley plus Ganton

4.     Pennard plus any of Royal Porthcawl, Tenby, Pyle, B&B, Saunton.

Is this the ticket?  If so How, When and who is eligible to vote on the decision?

If I can get enough lead time, I would love to attend.  I would opt for Alwoodley and point east.  Woodhall Spa, Royal West Norfolk, and Ganton.  I have not stidied a map so I am not certain about distances.

Everybody gets a vote under the Mayor Daley "vote early and vote often" principle, modified by Article VII, Clause c., paragraph iii. of the Buda Cup Constitution which states:

"All CGA members are created equal, but some are created more equal than others."

My allegiance is shifting to either Alwoodley or Pennard, in that order, primarily because we have two people (Nick and Sean) willing to step up to the plate for those venues.  I beleive that Alwoodley (particulalry with the Mackenzie/Centenary links) is most likely to get us solid participation.  If it is chosen, I would vote for not including Ganton as part of the formal agenda (pre or post oputings should be encouraged) as it would damage the "wa" of the event, and a game at one of the other Dr. Mack courses nearby would be more instructive and convenient.

This biggest vote on all of this should go to Philip, as Compere Ex-Officio.  Hopefully he will ake a few minutes off from trying to compute our bills for Buda IV to chime in......

Ganton is reachable from Leeds by train, with a changeover in the quaint gare of York, which carries on to Malton, the closest stop to Ganton.

York a lovely town for the other 'halves' should this be applicable to some of the participants' trip scenario.

Glad to see things taking shape. Either Pennard or Alwoodley is fine  by me, any dates except school holidays.
If Yorkshire gets the puff of white smoke I'm happy to extend the MacKenzie theme by arranging informal games at my club, Seaton Carew. (About 90 minutes from Alwoodley, more or less on the way for anyone travelling to or from east side of Scotland).

If you are thinking of Alwoodley I suspect you would be disappointed with Moortown.  It's not intact and there are a number of non-MacKenzie holes, largely forced on it when Moor Allerton sold their Mac course and moved to an RTJ course in the country, and when Sand Moor sold a number of holes for housing.  Ganton is a great course and would not disappoint.  Pannal is a fun course, so, too, is Ilkley, but I should not recommend travelling thousands of miles to play either of those - tack them on if you have a spare day left at the end.  What do others who know the modern Moortown think?

I felt that October was possibly slightly too late in the year to play two competitive rounds a day.  We were lucky with the weather at Hoylake - May or September would give an extra hour or two of daylight.

I loved Ganton. It is short enough for all to enjoy and challenging for the best. If Allwoodley is in that league then one is going to have great golf. .

I would agree.  Moortown is a good course and I always enjoy playing there but it is not in the same league as either Alwoodley or Ganton.

Logistically we should address the time of year asap. I reiterate that we were very lucky at Hoylake. August to early September would be a much safer bet. And from that angle, the East is a rain shadow, so another plus for Yorkshire.
More pluses (spelling?) - Leeds has some great hotels and restaurants, these days, including the sister restaurant of the Indian I went all the way to Bradford to try (it was worth it, see my weblog if you're interested).. and Whitby is a lovely seaside town not far from Ganton. Harrogate has a Hotel du Vin which I haven't been to, but the ones in Brighton and Bristol are top class.. I'm not sure if the bars quite match up to the Leasowe Castle, but you can get any Cuban cigar you want and a better burbon selection than you'll find in Louisville. That's where I was planning to stay if and when I finally do my Yorks piligrimage..
So I guess I'm for Yorks, and I'd include Ganton, it is worth getting up at 5 to make the scheduling work. They also allow guests on the weekend.
BTW - I've no idea if I'll be able to attend, but I will try , and can I get another shot at that Ward...?
PS - thanks for all +ve Antidepressant posts. I'm in Paris and it's finally a night off. Luna is apparently one of the best fish restaurants in town with a Michellin *, I'll report back asap.
