Amata Spring CC [Curley & Schmidt]
« on: July 11, 2006, 09:36:59 AM »
I had forgotten about these until I saw Eric Franzen's post on Vidbynas .

These were taken at the Europe v Asia match for the Royal Trophy at Bangkok in January .

The course had just opened last year and I knew it was a Curley & Schmidt , but I wasn't expecting much to be honest . Most of the Asian Tour courses I have seen are flat , bland with a flat pancake style of bunkering . I had also played a few Nicklaus Design courses in Asia , which I presume was the work of Lee Schmidt [?] , and again I wasn't exactly impressed .

But Amata Spring was different and the style of bunkering really stood out . Not only that but they were bunkers , some had lips and players were having think when in them . Also the lack of rough was refreshing , especially around the greens .

Of course , it wouldn't be an Asian course without a few gimmicks that they love so much . Island greens seem to be mandatory in these parts , and the finishing hole had a waterfall around the green .

Well that would be the finishing hole if you played the course . The nines were reversed for the competition , due to a worry that the matches would all finish before reaching the Island Green .

Behind the par 3 4th , on a scorching hot day .

Fairway of the 5th

The 8th . Before someone ask's there is a boat !

Fairway of the 9th . I have no idea why they shy away so much from an Asian style Clubhouse .

Approach to the 13th

Par 5 15th

Left of the 16th green

The par 3 17th , was my fav. hole on the course . Pro's were having a real problem , due to it playing into a wind . The bail out area right and bunkers were popular spots , which was no pushover shot either .

Tee of the 18th.

For some strange reason, the work "elephantine" comes to mind.

The Kings Putter V participants in Palm Springs just saw (and visited) a whole lot of those bunkers at the Palms and Plantation Golf Courses.  They looked better in person.

John and others,
The bunkering is much similar to Goose Creek here in SoCal.

They do that to on the wayward side of the bunkers to keep the ball in the bunker. However, the bunkers at Goose Creek are well placed and give the wide variety of holes a lot of character.

I may tend to push Schmidt & Curley here a bit and if its offensive to you John, I do apologize but I do think they build some fun golf courses and some really excellent clubs. I consider Brian to be a great friend and I'm grateful for him helping us out with KPV which was a really fun experience for me.

I think Brian meant to post this as the 18th:

Tommy,

I think it is great to push your friends or those who help you gain access to a course.  It doesn't bother me a bit and really all I ever thought this site was about anyway.  No biggy..

John
Goose Creek, the course which interest me the most that Curley & Schmidt have done is an affordable public course which should serve as a model for other courses to go by. It's fun, strategic and a cash cow for it's owners because it's packed all of the time. the clubhouse is small but practical but works perfect. You can sit there and enjoy a beverage and have a somewhat good meal and get out of there for under $60.00 on the weekend. It's also very walkable.

As far as access, well John I'm like you in the fact that I don't like people participating on here that are only in this for the access. I'm all for the discussion of golf architecture.

Tommy,

I think Curley is an Indiana boy who is currently working on French Lick...I'm sure the bunkers will look different than the style recently shown on these latest threads.   This may be his first Ross restoration and I'd love to join the two of you on a tour of the course.

No John That would be wrong.

Brian grew up in Pebble Beach. Lee Schmidt is the one from Indiana and it is he that is doing the work at French Lick. I know nothing about it other then hearing that Lee was doing that job from Brian.

I've never met Lee. I've only talked to him on the phone once and he seemed like a genuinely nice person. Have you seen any of his restoration work that would prove otherwise that he might not be the right choice? Do you have some information that might prove he is going completely in the wrong direction?

Tommy,

I have heard nothing but good things about the work at French Lick from completely unreliable sources...One guy being a consultant on the job and the other an insane car dealer.   If the work turns out right and the course is not too crowded with a bunch of "casino types" I should play the course many times in the near future.  I have very high hopes for the project...as it will be a huge boon to the boonies..

The picture of the 9th green and the clubhouse behind it looks so much like the 9th green (and the clubhouse behind it) of the Merlot 9-hole loop at Poppy Ridge (Livermore, CA) that it is kind of spooky.

I will try to find a photo link.

That Island green is a howl and the advertisement around it is fitting. Instead of bashing it can we just enjoy it for what it is?
